The first white settlement in St. Cloud, Florida was made in 1824, when Gideon Welles and his family moved from New York to the area. The Welles family operated a grocery store and later built a sawmill on the banks of the Muskegon River. In 1828, Isaac Stevens founded the town of Stevensville in what is now central St. Cloud. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, and by 1840, there were over 100 residents living in Stevensville. In 1846, the United States Congress passed a bill defining Indian Territory as part of Florida, which created an additional population boom for St. Cloud. By 1850, there were over 200 people living in St. Cloud proper and 150 more scattered throughout Indian Territory east of the river. In 1855, George Washington Bain purchased 860 acres (3 km2) of land adjacent to present-day downtown StCloud from Nicholas Atkinson for $5 per acre ($40 per km2). Bain intended to create a new city on this land and named it after himself – “Bain City” – but this idea was not well received by locals or state legislators; instead, he called it “StClair” after his home state of New York. In 1861, Bain City was renamed Collinsville after Jno Hennepin Collins who donated land for the city development and also served as its first Mayor (1861-1865). On April 14th 1865 during Union General John Dix's visit to rural southern Minnesota through Collinsville – which included stops at nearby Belle Plaine (now Minneapolis) – he announced that all remaining Confederate forces had been destroyed within Florida including Gainesville where President Abraham Lincoln had been born three years earlier on April 12th1849; this event marked America's entry into World War II with Japan invading South Korea four days later on April 26th1941
