In the early 1930s, the St. Cloud Air Force Base was home to the first flying squadron in the United States. The unit, which was known as "The Flying Tigers," flew Lockheed P-38 Lightnings during World War II. On July 10, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America's military responded with Operation Overlord. The St. Cloud Air Force Base lent its services to the Allied cause and played a significant role in defeating Japan. After World War II ended, the air force disbanded but left behind a legacy of aircraft production at St Cloud AFB that continues today. Many of these planes were used for aerial survey and mapping missions during peace time while also serving in wartime when required.

In 1948, the St. Cloud Air Force Base was opened and the first group of military personnel arrived in Florida. The base grew quickly and by 1961 it had a detachment of bombers and fighter planes called the "Airmen's Battalion". The squadron changed its name to the "St. Cloud Air Force Bombers" in 1967 and continues to serve at the base today as part of 1st Bomb Wing. In 1990, 1st Bomb Wing moved from St Cloud Air Force Base to Fort Worth Army Airfield, Texas where it remains present today as one of two wings operating out of that installation.

In 1907, following annexation by Jacksonville and Pasco counties, St. Cloud became a city under its own charter with an initial population of 602 residents (). After years of growth due to new construction and development along the riverfront such as shopping malls and hotels, it reached its current size with 17,993 residents in 2010. In 1821, the area now known as St. Cloud was part of what is now Polk County, Florida. In 1828, the first school in this area was opened by Reverend Augustus King and his wife, Rachel. The first post office in St. Cloud was established in 1830. In 1848, a railroad was built through this area, and the town began to grow rapidly. By 1865, it had become a full-fledged city. In that year, Governor John Crain decided to move the capital from Tallahassee to St. Cloud because of its growing population and economy. The city's first mayor was James Hennigan; he served two terms from 1865 to 1868. The city's growth continued during the 19th century; during that time it attained an estimated population of 100,000 people and became one of the largest cities in Florida with Respect to itsSize! It also became one of the most important centers for education within Florida due to its many fine educational institutions such as State Normal School (now University), Seminole College (now Samford University), Tampa Bible Institute (now Baptist Press), and Hillsborough County Agricultural College (now USF). During World War II, StCloud helped contribute significantly to Allied victory by providing essential materials for munitions factories throughout North America; moreover, many local businesses thrived along with government contractor jobs during this difficult time period as well! However following Victory Over Japan Day in 1945 when Japan surrendered all her possessions outside of Asia including Manchuria and Korea -StCloud slowly lost some much-needed economic stability until bankruptcy occurred only 4 years later prior tominent economic recession which led directly into current political instability across Central Florida
