In the early 1800s, St. Cloud was a small town in what is now south central Florida. It was first settled by Finnish immigrants who were looking for a land grant from the U.S. government. The settlers were successful in growing crops and forming a small community but their success did not last long because of problems with the weather and Native American attacks. In 1853, the government granted the settlement an official name, Saint Cloud, after General David Silliman of New York who had helped lead America's victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill. The town continued to grow rapidly and by 1875 it had reached its present size with 1,200 residents. At this time, Saint Cloud had several businesses such as a grocery store, school system, post office and churches. The growth of Saint Cloud led to many new families moving into the town which also caused some issues such as overcrowding in some of the homes which led to fires that destroyed many of these structures in 1906. Despite this problem, Saint Cloud continued to grow until 1940 when it amalgamated with nearby Clearwater to form Clearwater County.[1] TodaySaint Cloud is a historic district that has been designated by the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). St. Cloud is a city located in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,783 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city and county seat of Osceola County. St. Cloud was founded on November 12, 1837 by Captain George Stephenson as a fur trading post on the east side of Lake Michigan. The post was renamed St. Cloud in 1848 after the Russian governor of Siberia died in Russia and his wife took him to America to be buried there with her husband's remains interred at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1856, gold nuggets were discovered at Noorheeba Creek near present day Stcloud and the town quickly became a mining center for both gold and silver ore. During World War II, StCloud served as an airfield for military activity in central Florida; it had two runways measuring 3,000 feet (100 m) each and could accommodate up to three thousand aircraft operations per month from 1943-1945. After hostilities ended in 1945, many people left for new opportunities throughout the postwar period but some remained until 1975 when they vacated all their properties except for one which still stands today known as "The Stephenson House." In 1978–1979 two buildings on top of an old grain elevator were renovated as apartments called "The Stephenson Apartments" which remain extant today despite being demolished several times due to fire damage over time In early 1980s residents voted to annex parts of neighboring unincorporated Pinellas County because they felt that they needed more services provided by their larger city while keeping much of their cultural heritage intact including its downtown area which still functions as a commercial district today During this time growth started again around downtown with new businesses moving into historic districts such as The Stephenson Place Historic District (now part of Downtown Tampa) while other areas experienced increased housing development including Myers Park neighborhood now home to several high-end restaurants However during this time there also occurred some significant crime rates increase especially around downtown where multiple shootings have been reported within close proximity between 2001-2005 making it one of the most dangerous cities in Florida
