St. Cloud is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2000 census. The name "St. Cloud" was given to the town by Captain John A. Smith on July 3, 1847 as part of an effort to rename all of Polk County after General James K. Polk because of his role in the Mexican-American War and subsequent President Ulysses S. Grant's pardon of Mexico's president, Santa Anna. The first settler in St Cloud was Dragoons Private Hosea Wills who arrived on December 12th, 1837 from Illinois via Mobile Bayou near present day Panama City Beach and named his new community for military leader Stenhouse Palmer (1797-1860). Dragoons Private Wills built a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue in anticipation of becoming the county seat but this plan didn't come to fruition until 1840 when commissioners decided that Polk County would be divided into two townships with St Cloud as the county seat and namesake for both Townsships - which it remains today! The first school building was erected just east of where Park Avenue now stands in 1846 by local farmer Augustus Chapman and later served as the courthouse until 1898 when a more permanent structure was erected next door including a jail which still stands today! In 1870 St Cloud had 1 storey with 5 rooms and 30 inhabitants; however by 1890 it had increased to 2 stories with 10 rooms & 100 inhabitants! In 1893 another storey & 25 inhabitans were added making it a large & busy town center! During prohibition period (1920-1933) many businesses closed their doors due to being illegal but some such as Jukeboxes Unlimited opened again after repeal while others including Noble Tobacco continued operations despite being blacklisted! By 1933 St Cloud had shrunk back to its original size having only 8 houses left within its boundaries!! In 1940 there were just 4 houses left in town limits!!! Today much has changed since then withstadt growth resulting from numerous factories opening up along I-4 bringing jobs & investment directly into town limits increasing business activity especially around Park Ave which became known as "The Strip". In recent years downtown redevelopment has been taking place adding even more commercial space and housing available inside & outside of town limits bringing even more visitors & residents interested in exploring this vibrant community located right across Tampa Bay from downtown Tampa
St. Cloud was founded in 1892 by Norwegian immigrants, and quickly became a major city in southwestern Florida. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its position on the St. Johns River. In 1907, the City of St. Cloud merged with the Town of West Palm Beach to form one large municipality. In 1970, St. Cloud was named one of the "Towns that Changed America" by the National Geographic Society.
