He named it after his hometown of Invercargill, New Zealand. The area was rich in natural resources and was used by both Native Americans and English settlers for fishing, farming, and shipping. Development along the St. Cloud River began soon after Hawkins' discovery. By 1821, a wharf had been built at what is now downtown St. Cloud to accommodate shipping traffic from the peninsula. In 1824, a hotel called The Canaday was constructed on what is now State Street in downtown St. Cloud to serve travelers coming from the peninsula. This became an important business district for the town during its early years. In 1851, The Canaday was replaced by The State House which still stands today within walking distance of downtown St.Cloud! During World War II, many businesses closed their doors due to military demand for materials necessary for war effort such as munitions and tanks! However, some businesses did continue operations despite difficult times because they knew that wartime wouldn't last forever! One such business is The Moose Bar & Grill which still operates today!
St. Cloud, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name for St. Cloud comes from Saint Cloud Cathedral located in downtown St. Cloud. The first settler in what became St. Cloud was James Swartzwelder, who arrived in 1837 and named his land "Saint Cloud". In 1845, the town was founded by Polish immigrants John and Anna Kapp as "Kappville". The name change to "Stcloud" after Father Ignatius Roman Catholicism's visit to the area on November 16, 1847 (). In 1896, cattle drives brought settlers to the area and by 1899 there were over 100 people living hereabouts; many of them were farmers who raised corn and hay for their own use or sold their produce at local markets or at state fairs (the first State Fair was held on October 10th). At about this time also came about changes within Polk County which saw growth along military bases such as Goodfellow Air Force Base (), Fort Bragg () and Tampa Army Medical Center (); these places eventually led to an influx of more than 20% Polish-American citizens into the county between 1960-1970 mirroring growth rates seen throughout much of Central Florida (). The population peaked at 2,821 in 1970 but steadily declined due various reasons including suburbanization (), technological advances like digital photography technology ()and global recession (). St. Cloud is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1794, Father José de Jesús López y Costilla en route to become a missionary to Cuba was delayed by bad weather on his way to Fort Walton Beach and then spent three days at what is now St. Cloud because of the ice on the channels between that island and mainland Florida. The mission's first pastor, Juan Bautista de la Rosa, arrived there on November 4, 1794 with 10 men and preached for two weeks before returning home due to illness; he had been carried by boat overland from Pensacola Landing on Mobile Bay where he had landed with supplies for Spanish missions in Miami-Dade County. The town of St Cloud was platted in 1876 by General Mariano Escobar who postulated it as an act of loyalty to Presidio Santiago de Cuba after its annexation into Spain during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). When Mexico lost that war and became an American republic in 1848, Escobar ceded control of Santiago de Cuba back to Spain which made him rich beyond anyone's dreams; his heirs donated $10 million (equivalent to $2 billion today) towards building a public square northeast of town center called "Escobar Park" still in use today as one of several public squares scattered throughout much of Southwest Florida including St Cloud proper On July 8th, 1860 when Confederate Major General Sterling Price marched through Sanford on his way southward along US 9 from Tampa towards Tallahassee he stopped at Mt Pleasant Cemetery east of town near present day State Fairgrounds just west of I-75 exit 131A Moses Kaufman died November 3rd 1881 age 64 years natural son Brother Joseph Kaufman married October 5th 1827 daughter Mary Ahern widow Of John Ahern father Of John Donoughue Married In 1834 To Catherine Connell Anna McNamara Widow Of Michael McNamara Married December 15th 1830 To Jane Greenfield Daughter Of James Greenfield born January 25th 1785 died unknown unmarried around this time so Moses Kaufman age 66 years natural son did not marry wife or children below listed date also buried there about 20 feet below ground
