In addition to its economic role as a manufacturing center and trade center, St. Cloud also has become known for its educational institutions including the University of Central Florida and Eastern Florida State College; as well as its extensive nightlife and shopping district which includes two malls and several dozen restaurants and stores. The history of St. Cloud began with white settlers who arrived in 1819 when Major James Kiefer purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land along the river from Native Americans for $4 per acre ($166 total). The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer's headquarters in Fort Dearborn during his 1873 Indian Wars campaign against the Sioux tribe headquartered at nearby Wounded Knee Creek National Monument (now Parkland National Military Park). The first post office opened in 1826, but it was moved to what is now downtown in 1833 because of malaria epidemics that had killed many people in the surrounding countryside (). As a result of this relocation, much of what is now downtown was built up around old courthouse square (), which still stands today (). The early years were difficult for St. Cloud because it lacked any real infrastructure or services other than water transport from Lake Okeechobee to central Florida (). Thislimited development potential until 1892 when construction began on what became known as "the Orange Trail", one of only two remaining steam-powered railways running between Jacksonville () and Tampa () via cross-country travel (). This route allowed goods to be shipped southward from Tampa while providing passengers with an view of Orlando Sentinel editor Jesse Hinton's orange plantation outside Jacksonville () making it possible for residents to enjoy oranges fresh off the tree (); also new transportation options such as automobiles made life easier for residents who could now access jobs outside their homes without having to leave their neighborhoods (). In 1973 local businessman Bob Burdick donated land east sideof I-4 just north of SR 710 about 5 miles (8 km) east OF Exit 338B ontoSR 710 leading directly into downtown where he built Burdick Plaza housing both retail stores (.com LLC operated by Sears Holdings Corporation,) restaurants (.paradise island resort & casino operated by MGM Resorts International,) offices (.stcloud business services llc.), hotel rooms (.centurylink property management), service clubs/ping pong clubs,.and more; today Burdick Place forms one half block eastsideof Main Street between SR 410A/SR 412A

The first school in St. Cloud was built in 1849 and the first public services were provided in 1861 when a schoolmaster was hired to teachreading and writing to children in the town. In 1865, a store opened on State Road 9A near present-day Interstate 441 and soon afterwards, families started buying land around the store for up to $5 per acre (1/4 of an acre at today's prices). By 1870, there were over 20 families living in St. Cloud and it began to become a commercial center with businesses like grocery stores, dry goods stores, laundry facilities and more opening up throughout the years. In 1907, St."Cloud""s Women's Club organized its first club meeting with 50 members and within 5 years had grown into one of Florida's most important social organizations with over 1,000 members statewide
