In 1840 , John Arazio bought land northeast of present day downtown StPetersburg on which he erected the first brick building in what would become modern day downtown StPetersburg In 1850 , Filippo Lomonaco became Mayor Of Tampa and organized a petition drive to have StPetersburg designated as the County Seat Of Pinellas County In 1853 , Bishop James Gibbons arrived from Savannah GA to serve as interim pastor for Pinellas County before being elected permanent pastor On September 14th 1861 , during Confederate forces' attempted Invasion Of Florida under General Robert Ewells command Battle Of? resulted in over 50 deaths Including Gibbons who fell from his horse while leading troops into action

Pierce became an all-male naval station where American sailors trained for service in World War II during World War I The city began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location near Tampa Bay and its access to leading shipping routes including the Panama Canal Zone and the East Coast of America By 1909, St Pete had outgrown Fort Pierce so much that they built their first brick courthouse on Key Road adjacent to City Hall On January 1, 1912 St Pete merged with Hillsborough County into newly formed county government which lasted until 1915 when it too merged into new county government
