The St. Petersburg, Florida military community has been supportive of the local armed forces for more than 350 years. The first military unit to establish a presence in the area was Company D of the Florida Regiment, which arrived in 1820. The company was disbanded in 1826 because of financial difficulties. In 1861, the Confederate States Army invaded Florida and occupied St. Petersburg; however, only a few soldiers from Company D were able to resist General Robert E. Lee's forces and retreat back to their unit's home province of Georgia. Only one soldier from Company D was killed during the Battle of Fort Pickens on April 12th, 1861 - thus becoming one of the few Floridians who fought for Confederate independence against their own state government. Company D re-established itself in 1862 as part of Brigade C Troops 1st Infantry (later 2nd Infantry) Battalion under command Major General Oliver O'Neal Polk Jr.. On October 3rd, 1865, after Union troops had withdrawn from Tampa Bay following theBattle of Gaines Mill, Company D began its long march northwestward towards St Petersburg where it would finally disband some 25 years later on September 5th 1912 due to lack of replacement enlistees/materials available at that time

The United States Army Garrison of St. Petersburg, Florida was established in 1869 as a military post on the east coast of Tampa Bay. It served as an arms depot and training ground until it was closed in 1902. The garrison reopened in 1906 and continued to serve as a military post until its closure again in 1949. In 1962, the United States Army abandoned the post and it was decommissioned. The buildings were sold and used as commercial property until they were demolished in 1984.
