They named their new settlement for Prince Amalric II of Bavaria (the future King Ludwig I), brother of Emperor Napoleon III of France, who had been emperor since 1814 but had no official title at that time because he did not yet have full power over Germany proper as did his brothers Louis XVIII and Charles X & Louis Bonaparte jointly reigning through their mother Elisabeth Farnese. On July 4, 1813, Commodore James Cook sailed into Lake Pontchartrain off the coast of St Petersburg charting it as part of his exploration Expedition led by Rear Admiral Matthew Cateye Perry off USS Constitution (1801). Businesses downtown which used open space behind old gristmill boundaries prior thereto were allowed limited expansion until 1970s redevelopment destroyed mills reducing size & impact also eliminating 400 jobs! The original name for the camp was Fort George Wright which was renamed Fort Brooke after Major General David Ewart Brooke who had commandeered it from Florida’s Confederate forces during that conflict. In 1868, Stated Mayor James Breen said “When we get through making this place right there will be nothing like Fort Brooke left hereabouts” when he announced plans for what would become one of America’s most important commercial districts outside New York City thanks to then-Senator Daniel Webster’s efforts to promote railroad construction through central Florida while also expanding slavery into new territory south of Lake Okeechobee – all within commuting distance from Tampa Bay via steamboats on the Gulf Stream river system). In 1861, Confederate troops burned down St. Petersburg while invading Florida; this event is considered to be the beginning of the American Civil War.
