Fresh roasted coffee beans were first grown and traded in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the early 1800s. Coffee was an important crop in the area because of its high quality and unique flavor. The first coffee roasters in St. Petersburg were founded around 1810, and they began to grind coffee for their own use rather than selling it to local merchants. In 1837, a British entrepreneur named John Stephenson opened the first European-owned coffee shop in St. Petersburg. He started trading fresh roasted espresso beans from his shop until his death in 1861. The following year, Jules Brouillet opened his own café, La Belle Epoque, which became one of the most popular tourist destinations inSt Petersburg. By 1840, about 50 different cafes had been established throughout the city center and surrounding areas. During World War II, many of the original Dutch-founded coffee shops closed due to rationing policies instituted by the United States government during that time period.
