From the coffee shops that dot St. Petersburg's districts to the corporate campuses where students sip their morning java, coffee has been a part of the city for as long as people have lived in it. What began as small-scale roasting and brewing businesses has evolved into a booming industry that employs more than 120,000 people in Florida and throughout the Southeast United States. Today, there are countless coffee shops and cafes throughout St. Petersburg and its suburbs – from local joints on First Avenue South to chain restaurants like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts – providing an endless supply of delicious roasted beans, smooth cappuccinos, iced tea drinks, espresso shots, pastries, sandwiches and salads to enjoy while seated or standing at one of many locations around town. The history of gourmet coffee in St. Petersburg goes back even further than this; the first cafe opened its doors on Front Street in 1887. At that time, residents of what is now downtown wereregularly gathering at various taverns for breakfast before journeying off to their day jobs or going shopping for groceries. One such patron was Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1848-1941), who frequented The Coffee House at 517 Front Street beginning in 1892. She later donated her share of the business to her husband Avery Chase (1865-1928) in memory of his late mother – which became The Whitney Café next door. In 1906, The Coffee House moved across First Avenue South from its original location on Front Street into what is now known as The Drake Hotel! During prohibition (1920-1932), several local breweries served alcohol without permitting customers to purchase caffeine products like espresso or hot chocolate

The first gourmet coffee in St. Petersburg, Florida was The Coffee House, opened in 1906 by the brother and sister team of Harry and Elsie Goldstein. They served a variety of coffees from their store in the heart of downtown. By 1907, The Coffee House had evolved into what is now called The Roxy Coffee Shop. In 1912, Dutch Schultz opened his own coffee shop on Second Avenue in St. Petersburg which became known as Schultz's Social Club. In 1933, Schultz's coffee shop moved to 125 N Main Street and operated until its closure in 1985. At that time it was the only coffee shop east of Miami Beach with a storefront out front and seating for over 100 customers inside or outside on the sidewalk adjacent to the streetlight. In 1984, Howard Schultz founded Starbucks Corporation with his sons Doug and Jonathan – the first Starbucks location was located at 350 West Union Street inSt Pete Beach (now closed). In 1997 Starbucks opened its first international location - Shanghai, China - becoming the second largest U.S.-based coffee company after Dunkin' Donuts Corporation (which has since been acquired by Procter & Gamble). In 2006 Starbucks announced plans to open more than 12,000 stores worldwide over two years; however this plan was later cancelled due to financial difficulties caused by iPhone sales growth throughout 2007-2009
St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 134,615 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Pinellas County after Clearwater and is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The City of St. Petersburg was founded on December 12, 1816 by Captains Gabriel DeSoto and James Rossiter as an independent village named for Russian captain Peter the Great who had died in 1727 while exploring southFlorida. The name "St. Petersburg" means "the cape of land." Captain DeSoto landed his party here on December 12, 1816 after spending more than three weeks sailing from Havana, Cuba on his way to explore what lay to the north in what is now Sarasota County and Marco Island. On January 4, 1817 he submitted a report on his discoveries to Congress adding that "the country we have just discovered contains many valuable Acres (of Land)...It would be difficult to overestimate its value." This event helped spur Congress to pass legislation authorizing Spanish settlers to establish a mission in what is now downtown St Pete Beach under Mexican leadership called San Carlos de la Vega; however this venture failed when Mexico lost control of Cuba during the American Revolution On November 16th 1861 Florida became a Confederate States of America state following secession from the Union. The city saw heavy fighting throughout the war with many casualties including General David Hunter's brigade which fought at Fort Pickens near present day Vincent Park The post office was established at St Pete Beach on October 26th 1895 In 1932 Bendix Aviation started operations at nearby Clearwater International Airport becoming the first airline headquartered within U S mainland

In 1916, when Hillsborough County was created, St. Petersburg became one of its five county seats; it remained so until 1990 when it lost its seat to Clearwater County due to population growth within that county only). After World War II ended and Tampa grew rapidly, St. Petersburg regained its position as the capital of Hillsborough County but never regained the title of largest city within Tampa-St. Petemberlingac[1].

In 1821, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and he decided to move the seat of government from New York City to St. Petersburg because he wanted to promote American interest in Russia. In 1824, Nicolás Maduro was elected as president of Venezuela and he decided to move the seat of government from Caracas to St. Petersburg so that Venezuelans could better learn about American policymaking processes. St. Petersburg is home to many famous people such as Lev Tolstoy, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky who all lived or worked here during their careers
