St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 43,865 at the 2000 census. The city was founded by Sergeyevich Romanov in 1813 as a small military outpost on the east coast of Tampa Bay. It became an important seaport for sugarcane and cotton trade during the 19th century; its first municipality was formed in 1864. In 1901 it amalgamated with Hillsborough to form St. Petersburg-Hillsborough County. The city's economy has been based largely on service and tourism since the early 21st century; however, there has been some revival of manufacturing and IT businesses in recent years. The earliest human habitation in what is now St Petersburg dates back to 3000 BC when Paleo-Indians hunted and collected shellfish on Long Island Sound near where present-day Tampa is located. Archeologists have found evidence that Native Americans living in what is now St Petersburg may have traded goods with Indian tribes along Tampa Bay before being displaced by European settlers who arrived in large numbers after the end of the American Revolutionary War (1783). After independence from Great Britain, Russian settlers began arriving from all over Russia including Saint Petersburg to establish new settlements around what is now Tampa Bay beginning with Fort Harrison on Kings Highway (now US 1) about 2 miles northwest of present day downtown St Petersburgh (then spelled Peeblesburgh). This store would become one of America’s most popular shopping destinations with customers coming not only from inland but also coastal counties such as Hillsborough By 1850 Lopatin had built two more steamboats capable each carrying 30 tons followed shortly thereafter by James Vail operating a ferryboat connecting Clearwater Harbor with Ybor City across Lake Erie This rapid growth led eventually to incorporation or organized government under Royal Charter granted December 15th year 1853 by Governor David Wilkes .
