The United States Marine Corps has been deployed in many places around the world, but one of its most famous deployments is in St. Petersburg, Florida where it has proudly served since World War II. The Marines have a rich history here in this city which can be seen in the way they are still Honorary Citizens and maintain a presence in various sectors of the community. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Donelson, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his Marines to protect civilian populations inside the fort. This was an important moment for the Marines as it demonstrated their commitment to military service and their dedication to protecting civilians. From then on, the Marines have been stationed here permanently as part of United States Armed Forces units. Today, there are over 4500 Marines stationed here across three battalions including Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion (Langley), 3rd Battalion (Wright) and 2nd Battalion (Fletcher). These teams work together closely with local law enforcement to provide security for citizens and businesses alike during events like holiday celebrations or parade days. In addition to providing security for these events, the Marines also offer humanitarian assistance when needed such as working with relief organizations during natural disasters or helping evacuate people from areas affected by conflict or violence. This deployment is an important contribution by our Marine Corps who have worked hard for years to contribute positively to their adopted city – St Petersburg!

In the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States deployed a large number of marines to St. Petersburg, Florida in order to protect the city from potential missiles attack. The marines were initially stationed at Fort Pierce Naval Station, but soon moved to Camp Lejeune. They continued to be stationed in St. Petersburg until October 1962 when they were redeployed back to Fort Pierce Naval Station.
St. Petersburg, Florida is located in the state of Florida and has a population of over 66,000 people. The city is the county seat for Pinellas County and it is bordered by Hillsborough County to the north, Pasco County to the east, St. Lucie County to the south and Clearwater County to thewest. The geography of St. Petersburg makes it an important commercial center for southern Florida due to its location on Tampa Bay and its close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami. The area that now comprises St. Petersburg was first settled by Seminole Indians in 1795 following their removal from South Carolina. In 1814, Captain John Smith discovered what would become St. Petersburg when he landed on Tampa Bay after sailing through present-day Sarasota County on his way back from a trading expedition that explored Central America. After gaining control of what is now Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties in 1821, Governor James Kenedy established Fort George at what is today downtown St Petersburg in 1824 with British assistance in order to protect against Spanish attempts to gain possession of Florida during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). By 1850, there were over 20 businesses operating within downtown Saint Petersburg alone! As this growing town began expanding beyond its original boundaries into neighbouring Hillsborough and Pasco Counties (including today’s communities of Dunedin, Plant City and Boca Raton), Fort George was decommissioned in 1853 and all military activity within downtown stopped abruptly two years later! Today’s buildings date back To this time period with only a few exceptions! An interesting footnote about Fort George is that although Originally built as part of a chain reaction that included nearby Forts Donelson (founded in 1819) & Pickens (established in 1827), both Forts were abandoned soon thereafter due to also becoming de facto Ulysses S Grant territory during the American Civil War (1861-65)! Although FtGerald still boasts one of Tallahassee’s most impressive skyline views thanks largely to its commanding position atop Tarpon Springs Airport just outside Of Downtown Tallahassee (!), It has since been demolished completely – rendering it nearly impossible for tourists or locals alike ever set foot inside Its walls again! As Fort George slowly declined throughout the 19th century due largely To budgetary constraints set forth by General Gaines during Reconstruction EraGovernor David Wilcox designated Downtown Saint Petersburg as “The New Havana” upon taking office in 1897 pursuant To plans drawn up by then Mayor Jno Marconi who had earlier visited Cuba while serving as United States Representative from Palm Beach County.. This designation helped lead directly To increased tourist arrivals And international business interests driving development along Mulberry Street which runs parallelTo State Road 805A right outside Of Government Center !!!!! Since World War II however things have changed rapidly For Downtown Saint Petersburg ! After being relegated once againto second class status following numerous fires which destroyed much OfOld TownLine street frontageIn 1969 thru 1975 various institutions including 3 hospitalsAn ad hoc libraryAn auto parts storeAnd several other businesses took up residenceInWhat we currently knowAs Government Center !!!!! In 1832, St. Petersburg was incorporated as a city and in 1899 it became an international city with a population of over 1 million people. The region now known as Tampa Bay was first settled by Native Americans and was first inhabited by Apalachicola Indians before being traded to Spanish settlers in the 16th century. In 1811, when Seminole Indians attacked St. Petersburg, General Andrew Jackson ordered his troops to march into town and drive them out. Because of this action, St. Petersburg became one of the most important cities in Florida during its early years and became the capital of Florida from 1795 until 1840 when Jacksonville took that role.
