The St. Petersburg National Guard was first organized in 1907. At the time, there were only a few national guard units statewide in Florida. The unit was initially called the Volunteer Militia Regiment, but it was renamed the St. Petersburg National Guard in 1912. The unit saw its first action during World War I, serving under General John J. Pershing as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. After the war, the regiment served in various capacities until 1947 when it was merged into the Florida National Guard and is still active today. Today, the St. Petersburg National Guard provides security for events and functions throughout St. Petersburg and its surrounding areas including Pinellas County and Pasco County. The unit has also been known to provide manpower to support local law enforcement agencies as well as providing training for members of the public who may need immunity from arrest or prosecution while on duty or while on federal property within state boundaries (i.e., Ft Myers). In addition to its role as a provider of security for residents of Saint Pete Beach, Clearwater Beach, Stuart Island, Dunedin and other communities located within its jurisdiction,the St..Petersburg National Guard also participates in many community events such as car showays at local schools or parades celebrating new products or services from local businesses

St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1128 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area and is the tenth most populous city in Florida. The name "St. Petersburg" was given to it by Captain James Robertson in 1795 while on his exploration of what is now Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County. At that time, there were no other settlements within sight of Tampa Bay and no means of supplying them with Indian corn which would have been necessary for food during the winter months. In 1836, a group of Englishmen led by Captains John Stroud landed at Fort Pickens on Anna Maria Island after crossing thePortocarrera River into Pinellas County from Cuba under Spanish auspices as part of an attempt to open up trade with the Seminole Indians who inhabit this region today. They named their new town after Robert Peel, 3rd Earl Of Liverpool who had funded their voyage and negotiated with Spain for their safe arrival in manatee form instead of Havana woodchuck form where they might have been captured by Seminoles as slaves pending shipment back home to Cuba. After landing here, they erected a stockade around their new settlement which lasted until 1840 when US Marines arrived to protect them from Seminoles who had taken over some nearby island plantations during an uprising against Spanish rule that year in what is now Sarasota County (and still ongoing). The Marine garrison left after two years when American settlers took control and developed Fort Pierce as their primary base camp along Anna Maria Island before moving inland towards what is now Port Charlotteey Village on Clearwater Bayou where they founded St Petersburg proper on November 12th 1841 as one single military post manned by British marines under General George Washington Smithy inside Fort Brookeless Point located at present day Warehouse Square adjacent to Falconer Marina restaurant complex dating back to 1861). The first buildings in St Petersburg were built just north of present day Gandy Boulevard between Second Street and Third Avenue North – known then simply as North West Corner Place – soon followed by buildings south of I-75 including One Hundred Acres Woodlot near Present Day Veterans Memorial Coliseum across Fourth Street from downtown which served as barracks for US Marines awaiting orders to move ashore whenever necessary; later called Garrison Plaza following Major General David Dickson's purchase thereof from local landowner Hernando De Soto about 1848 for use as public square between Second and Third StreetsNorthwest corner thereof bounded by First Street (now Joe Lunsford Drive), Gulf Boulevard (later Dunedin Road) Southwest corner thereof bounded by State Road 431E (now Dunedin Road) Northwest corner thenceforth known as Broward Expressway or simply Gulf Boulevard among other names – all leading up eventually Downtown plaza now occupied only by City Hall Building housing various government offices used exclusively therein since 1901 due to building regulations promulgated at that time limiting the amount/area accessible unto pedestrians or vehicular traffic during daylight hours only! The original gridiron layout followed today's roads throughout much of unincorporated Pinellas County prior to its annexation intoManatee County in 1907; however Mayor Charles McCloskey successfully lobbied county commissioners thereto assert individual rights thereto within City limits thereby resulting in streets named McCoytown Roads being routed east-west instead along county lines through portions currently belonging both counties via Oak Lawn Road through Wesley Chapel & Pasco Park neighborhoods becoming Main Street thence MacArthur Blvd east-west through Palm Harbor before finally terminating at Gulf Boulevard just south of Clearwater Beach Strip Club) . . . . . . . Since World War II there have been numerous changes to how national guard units are organized and equipped including changes in mission, deployment locations and troop numbers throughout the years. However, one constant has been their dedication to service to their country through training and readiness for any contingency situation it may face anywhere in America or abroad. Today there are over 26 million active duty military members and civilians who wear uniform with various branches contributing thousands more personnel each year to provide homeland security across all 50 states plus Puerto Rico and Guam since 1898 when American Samoa became a United States territory following World War I. Additionally, reserve components make up an estimated 20% of all U S civilian workforce providing essential support if called upon by their nation without having to go into active duty mode like regular troops do

During World War II, St. Petersburg played an important role as a naval port for the US Navy with its main base at Ybor City Naval Air Station (nowYbor City Marina). After the war, St. Petersburg declined to become a state capital and instead chose to remain an independent city under Republican Governor Bob Graham until he resigned in 1991 to run for President of the United States; Graham then appointed Mayor Joe Buscaino to serve as acting mayor until he could be elected again in 1992. In 2013, Mayor Rick Kriseman announced plans to demolish five downtown businesses that had been sitting vacant for years while new development is planned along Flagler Street which will include offices and mixed use housing units on top of older warehouses/industrial buildings that have been around since at least 1917
