St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,682 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–Clearwater–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1837 by Captain John Stroud and his wife Anna Maria. Stroud named it for Saint Petersburg in Russia after he visited there in 1824 on a trip through Central America. The first settlement in what is now St. Petersburg was on the east side of the bay where today's downtown is located; this area included land that would later be developed into what is today's inner waterfront district including parts of Ybor City and Seminole Heights neighborhoods as well ashatting Marina Park and Fort Harrison Park across from US 1 (now US 169). In 1835, Captain John Stroud and his wife AnnaMaria established a gristmill on the west bank of Tampa Bay between East Grand Boulevard and North Key Avenue to supply briefcase makers with flour for theirNew England businesses back home; this mill remain[d] active until 1916 when it burned down due to an arsonist attack. Anna Maria also started a school which she taught from her farmstead near present-day Winter Garden Road/Atlantic Boulevard until her death in 1850; this school would continue operating until 1940 when it relocated to its current site across street from US 1 just north of Clearwater Naval Base & US 19

In 1815, the area that is now St. Petersburg was part of Spanish Florida. The first Englishman to set foot in what is now St. Petersburg was Christopher George Sylvester, a British officer, in 1818. He had come from Jamaica and explored the area as part of a military expedition commanded by General James K. Polk. In 1825, Captain John Seddon built Fort Myers on the southern tip of Tampa Bay to protect American interests in Spanish Florida. After the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Americans began expanding their influence into Spanish Florida and Fort Myers became a key U.S.-Spanish military post. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay, American troops under General Gideon Welles evacuated the fort and burned it down; this event marks the beginning of HispanicAmerican integration into U.S.-dominated society in Tampa Bay County
