The Stuart Coffee Company was founded in 1935 by Harry and Betty Stroud. The company grew rapidly, becoming one of the leading coffee companies in Florida. In 1950, the company acquired a small plantation in eastern Florida. The operation became known as the Stroud Farms plantation coffee business. In 1958, Harry Stroud passed away and his wife Betty took over the management of the company. The Strouds continued to operate the coffee business until their death in 1984.
Stuart, Florida is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,749 at the 2010 census. Stuart is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stuart were Spanish explorers in 1565. At that time there were no towns in this area and only villages scattered around the bayous. After Spain lost New Mexico to Mexico in 1821, it became possible for American settlers to explore these areas and establish trading posts along the Gulf of Mexico coast. In 1829 an act of Congress designated Stuart as a county seat of Pinellas County and by 1830 it had a population of 100 people. In 1835 Seminole Indian leader Osceola moved his stronghold from Stonington, Connecticut to present-day Stuart after victory over American forces during the Second Seminole War (1835-1839). A smallpox epidemic killed many native Americans in 1839-1840; however, when General Andrew Jackson arrived on horseback December 5, 1840 with 11 regiments of cavalry seeking revenge for the death of nearly all his men ataginado Creek (now Fort Myers), he found only two other Native Americans living within five miles of Stuart: one at Fort Taylor near present day Hillsborough Boulevard and another near Clearwater Naval Air Station just north of downtown via US 95/State Route 912 (now US 395). By 1850 much development had occurred within ten miles eastward including new churches and schools founded by Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians; brickyards began production; citrus farming flourished; warehouses built for goods imported from Europe soon became busy handling items such as flour brought down from Mobile Bay; cattle ranching developed with herds up to 6500 head later increased to 10 thousands by 1880. By 1900 Stuart’s population was about 7200 people with an agricultural economy that included palm oil farming on mangroves offshore and sugar cane growing on land leased from Cuba or Manuel Antonio Island off shore; major industries included fishing (self-fishing being especially important), shipbuilding (CubaSB loaded vessels importing cargoes such as rice) and engineering work conducted on roads connecting Tampa with Pensacola or Jacksonville which led first into agriculture then into industry while also providing social services vital to rural residents including banking institutions which served as arteries feeding commerce with goods exported both domestically and internationally through Point Pedroou Landing before entering US 80 leading eventually inland past Stuebchen Lake until reaching Sanford Garden Suburb just outside today’s Downtown Disney Resort complex where commercial operations terminated decades ago but significant residential buildings remain well into the 21st century some dating back more than 200 years Today Stuart has one school – Presbyterian Academy Prep School – serving grades PreK-8th grade along with four churches – First Baptist Church remodeled in 2006 using funds raised through fundraising drives subsequent expansions added a sixth church - Grace Episcopal Church completed in 2008 - Methodist Zion Evangelical LutheranChurch completed in 2013 - Third Presbyterian Church opened its doors on October 12th 2016
