Stuart, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach-Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stuart is known for its fishing and golf courses, as well as its small town atmosphere. The first people to live in Stuart were Creekside Indians who arrived in 1778. They were followed by English settlers in 1839 and American settlers in 1851. The name Stuart means "place of the white man." The post office was established in 1853 and named after General James Fenton Stewart, who fought against Seminole Indians during the Mexican War. In 1907, the townsite was renamed Stuart after Admiral James Biddle Stewart, Jr., United States Navy (19th century Commodore). In 1946, plans were made to develop a shopping center on land that had been donated by Mrs. Mabel Woodruff Price from what is now called Airport Boulevard south of I-10 east of Stuart Boulevard. These radios were very helpful in coordinating efforts between different agencies and were used extensively during disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Many organizations have contributed money over time which has helped make a difference for our coast guard members. For example, The Salvation Army has given generously over time towards equipment repairs and new acquisitions for the coast guard’s cutter fleet; this has allowed us to purchase additional resources that have been crucial in keeping our coast safe both now and into the future!
