Stuart, Florida is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Stuart was named for General James Fisk Stuart, who served as military governor of Florida from 1827 to 1830. The first settler in Stuart was George Stephenson who built a cabin on the site of present-day Stuart Lake in 1829. A post office called Stirton was established in 1837 and remained in operation until 1906. A post office called Stuart was established in 1905, and it remained operational until 1959. In 1933, the name of the communitywas changed to Stuart Beach after General James Fisk Stroudt

Stuart, Florida is a town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 7,871 people. The name Stuart comes from a horse named Stuart that was used by General John C. Fremont during his attempt to explore the region in 1836. The first settlers in Stuart were Englishmen who arrived there in 1837. They built a small cabin and started trading with the local Seminole Indians. In 1840, an American military expedition under General Andrew Jackson discovered the area and fortified it with artillery as part of his campaign against Seminole Wars insurgentslords some twenty miles to the east at Fort Brooke on Lake Okeechobee Creek. When Floridians heard about this they began calling the area Stuart because General Jackson's troops had passed through here twice on their way to fight Seminoles near Jacksonville. By 1865, when Florida gained statehood, most of Brevard County lay within what is now Stuart except for a strip along Orange River that remained under Spanish control until 1898 when US forces ousted them and took over much of south-central Florida including Stuartsville which became part of Jacksonville In 1861 Confederate Major General Jubal Early invaded Tampa Bay from Georgia and advanced northeast overland towards Tampa before being stopped at Fort Hamilton by Union Brigadier General Robert Ewell (later Confederate Lieutenant Governor)). After Early's defeat at Second Battle of Bull Run on October 17th 1861 almost all eastern Tennessee across Alabama into Mississippi came under Union control leaving only western coastal plantations such as Mobile still held by Confederates until 1865 when those holdings were also overrun and absorbed into Union territory
