Stuart, Florida is a census-designated place in Clay County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. Stuart is located on U.S. Highway 30 south of Gainesville and north of Jacksonville. It is part of the Gainesville–Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General James Stewart, who fought in the Mexican War and subsequent American Civil War as a brigadier general and colonel. The first post office in Stuart was established in 1857, and served intermittently until 1915 when it became part of Jacksonville. In 1905, a group of businessmen pooled their resources to purchase land east of town on what is now State Road 441 which they christened "Stuart Land." They built a large cotton plantation with more than 100 slaves working it until 1861 when emancipation came into effect across Florida; thereafter the plantation ceased operations and today only traces remain from its days of slavery (the slave quarters are still extant). A small museum located within the old cotton fields tells about this history via artifacts such as tools used by slaves during their workdays as well as periodicals from that time period which were mailed to Stuarts throughout the state. In 1916, after years of discussion among local officials over plans to build a new courthouse or jail near town center due to overcrowding at existing buildings, Stuart voters passed an ordinance designating $5 per acre for building purposes within town limits – making it one of the first towns in Florida to do sofoundation stone being laid by then Mayor Fenton Hughes on December 12th 1916 The current courthouse was built between 1951-1953 with funds provided by Gulf Oil Company founder Royce Lamberton Jr., father-in-law of former Governor Jeb Bush A fire destroyed most portions of downtown Gainesville on November 17th 2002 leaving much damage including both original Victorian architecture dating back to 1864 & replacement brick buildings erected since then In October 2009 developer Joe Pappas announced he had bought majority ownership stake in historic Plantation Square shopping mall Opry Mills mall just outside city limits
