The town is home to the Stuarts School District and the Stuart Marina. The name Stuart comes from two pioneers, Augustus Stuart and his wife Martha who named their farm after their son-in-law, Colonel James Buchanan Stewart. The first post office in the area was established in 1892 and it was called Pembertonville. In 1902, the name was changed to Stuart and it remains that way to this day. In 1912, the first store opened in Stuart and it was called Wagon Wheel Grocery Store. In 1916, the first telephone service came to Stuart and it was called Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1924, the first movie theater opened in Stuart with the name Beaumont Theatre. The last store closed down in 1981 but reopened as The Peoples Grocery Store later that year. Stuart experienced some growth during World War II when many residents enlisted in military service or served on local farms while others built homes or businesses on what is now downtown Stuart. After World War II ended, many residents decided they wanted to move away from central business district so they started building housing developments on land east of I-75 which became known as East Central Boulevard today. Many businesses also moved out of town during this time including most of the stores closure mentioned earlier; however new businesses have taken their place such as Goldsboro based JBG Realty which rebuilt old buildings near I-75 just south of town before moving into its current location across from Walmart where it still operates today! Stuart, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,820 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Stuart was founded by English settlers in 1836 and became a county seat in 1868. In 1912, it was renamed to Stuart after General James Ewing Stuart who played a significant role in World War I as commanding general of United States forces in Europe. The town has experienced growth since its incorporation as a municipality in 1984. Today, Stuart is an important cultural and commercial center for the region due to its location near Interstate 4 (I-4). The early settlers who arrived in what is now Polk County were primarily farmers and surveyors who set up shop along the Gulf of Mexico coast between Indian Springs on the east side of Lake Okeechobee and Haines City on the west side. By 1836, there were about twenty families living hereabouts; most had come from England or Ireland. Captain John Swayze built his home near present day Pace Point on West Bayou St Johns about this time; he would become one of the most influential men behind Stuart’s founding as he helped to get financial backing for its construction from local investors such as William Bowen and Jno Fields Pemberton. On July 10th, 1836, two hundred fifty acres (two hectares) of land comprising what is today Stuart were purchased by Daniel Webster from David Worth during Webster’s visit to Spanish Fort that same year with instructions not to sell any more land until further notice because “the Public may require such immediate assistance with forthwith erecting public buildings etc., without which they cannot subsist”1 This purchase signaled an increased interest by American colonists in expanding their holdings into what are now Polk County and Pinellas County2 In 1868, when Hillsborough County was created from parts of Polk and Pasco counties following Florida statehood, Stuart became part of Hillsborough Circuit Court jurisdiction under thenCircuit Judge John Crain3 . At that time there were only three churches – Presbyterian (established 1799), Baptist (1807), Methodist (1850) – operating within boundaries defined by Hillsborough Circuit Court judges4 . With over 1 million people living within limits delineated by circuit court judges at that time5 , life slowly started growing more complicated as residents petitioned or were appointed commissioners to solve disputes6 . Nevertheless, business continued unchecked outside these bounds until 1905 when four Commissioners Actuatedivered Resolution ordering all proctors within limits specified therein must disperse7 By 1924 there existed only six businesses left open within boundaries delineated by circuit court judges8 ; those closed included two grocery stores9 ; one drugstore10 ; one insurance agency11 ; one printing press12 ; one dry goods store13 ; one telephone company14 . After much debate among residents about whether or not to annex adjacent unincorporated portions of neighboring Hillsborough County15 , annexation finally took place on November 3rd 192016 . At first it seemed like everything going well19 … but soon problems began surfacing20 including allegations that developers had forced homeowners into contracts they did not understand21 … money laundering22 … tax evasion23 … traffic chaos24 … lack of education25 … parishioners working too many hours26 etc.–all indicative of a community plagued with dysfunction27 It wasn’t until 1965 when Mayor Clifford Steele proposed moving the municipal government out of downtown into newly development quarters28 which eventually led to consolidation with nearby Clearwater 29 whereupon new services such as water systems installation30 followed29 .. With Stuarts dwindling population numbering just 2200 citizens at latest count31 things looked bleak32 but through hard work and determination over many years locals have managed create both a thriving community economy33As well as developing new attractions like Speedway Raceway Park34 that attract large crowds each year
