In 1906, after years of being without a city government, then-Mayor Tom Hickey petitioned for and received approval from voters to establish a city government in Stuart under the name "City Of Stuart." On July 1, 1907, City Of Stuart officially came into existence with Mayor Hickey as its first mayor and a Council made up entirelyof citizens who lived or worked in or vicinity to City Hall on Post Road near Interstate 95/U.S. Route 41 eastbound exit only minutes after voting closed at 5 p.m., setting off what would be oneof history’s most dramatic civic changes in local government when “A New Town”magazine called it “one of Floridas Most Radically Different Towns” less than two months later! During World War II, City Of Stuart played an critical role as one of six military airfields supplying Tampa with fighter pilots needed for Korean War operations against Communist North Korea Air Force units operating from Pyongyang airport below ground level where Japanese aircraft were positioned to provide cover for those flying over our cities while we slept! In addition to providing vital air support for troops fighting on land and sea during some very tough times there were also many Navy aviation enthusiasts visiting us each week during this time period involved with anything naval related whether you counted submariners or not they all helped contribute something special no matter how small or unimportant their contribution may have seemed at first glance! On July 14th, 2006, Hurricane Wilma passed through Panhandle County and made landfall at Stuart with winds over 115 mph (185 km/h). The storm caused extensive damage across much of Panhandle County including total loss of business establishments valued at $158 million dollars ($1 billion today). Wilma also left more than two hundred people dead or missing and many infrastructure structures such as bridges were destroyed or damaged beyond repair.
Stuart, Florida was founded in 1885 by J.B. Stuart and is the oldest town in Polk County. The community was named for General James B. Stuart who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Florida. In 1907, a postoffice called Stuart was established in honor of General Stuart and the community continued to be called that until 1959 when it became known as Stuart proper. In 1961, the name change again when it became known as Polk County's official capital.
