Stuart, Florida is a small town located in Panhandle County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The area that Stuart covers has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. In 1838, the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and his men discovered what would become Stuart when they landed on an island in St. Marks Bay. At the time of its discovery, Stuart was called "New Spain" because it lay between San Miguel and Havana. In 1845, Stuart became part of Seminole Nation after their war with Spain ended. The first white settler in Stuart was Captured William English who established himself there around 1800. English name means "place where the deer live." A store and post office were built here in 1827 by Captain John Gregg before he joined forces with General Andrew Jackson to help suppress Seminole resistance against American settlers encroaching on their land. After England's death in 1828, his heirs decided to sell the property to Jacksonville lawyer James Buchanan for $2,500 cash while still retaining title to it as part of their claim to the territory known as Indian Territory following victory over Spanish forces at Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Buchanan sold Stuart Island (later renamed Plantation Key) northwest of downtown Tampa to Cushman & Wakefield for $1 million less than its appraised value due to low navigability and lack of key points suitable for navigation leading upriver from Tampa Bay along present day Old Tampa Bay Road which bisects Plantation Key today just north of US 41/SR 470 intersection In 1893, Jeptha Litchfield purchased Plantation Key from Buchanan's heirs for $4 million more than its appraised value due to new developments including a golf course and resort which have increased its current market value by more than $200 million since then! Stuart, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Stuart was founded in 1892 by James Witherspoon and his family. In 1924 it became a city. A fire destroyed much of the downtown business district in 1970, but sparked redevelopment that has kept Stuart growing since then. The first post office in Stuart was established on December 9, 1892. The first store built there was called the "Gardener's Store", which closed in 1899 because of prohibitionist pressure from anti-drug activists in nearby Jacksonville. The first real estate transaction in Stuart took place on November 12, 1907 when John Pemberton sold land to local banker Julius Crain for $5 per acre (a total value of $135). In 1912 Soo Lumber Company bought an adjacent tract for $2 per acre (a total value of $24). By 1928 all lumber businesses had been folded and replaced by other endeavors such as agriculture or tourism; this time however, growth resumed with construction of Interstate 95 starting eastward from Jacksonville and continuing northwest to Tampa Bay; the community benefited greatly from this highway development as many jobs were created along its length. In 1974 Stuarts original downtown district burned down due to a fire that destroyed most of their business district; however redevelopment occurred that kept the community thriving ever since then as they rebuilt what was lost including placing new businesses into old buildings and creating new neighborhoods within their boundaries making it one of today's most unique communities within Jacksonville metropolitan area On February 22nd 2018 Stuart’s newest school opened - Crossroads Preparatory School!
