Stuart, Florida was founded by the Indians in what is now Pensacola, Alabama on July 3, 1783. The area that would become Stuart was then a part of the Spanish colony of Santa Rosa de Tabacalera. A land grant was given to James Robertson on October 10, 1801 and it became known as Robertson’s Land. On January 15, 1814, General Gabriel West and his army invaded Spanish territory in Pensacola and occupied Robertson’s Land. Aftermath of the battle resulted in many arrests and executions of Native Americans including Chief Manuel de Ayala who was beheaded on November 4th, 1814. The first white person to arrive in Stuart likely came from Mobile Bay in Alabama on August 25th, 1819 when James Cook arrived with the USS Beagle. In 1830-1831 Captain John Sledge traveled through this region for wintering with whaling ships under Admiral Farragut at Pensacola Naval Station before sailing back upriver to New Orleans where he met Commodore Perry who offered him passage to Japan if he could find a way across the equator without being detected by Spain. On December 6th, 1830 Captain John Sledge set out from New Orleans down river limits established by Commodore Perry as modern day Stuart which included now known as Nassau County
