It is part of the Tampa-Clearwater-Port St. Lucie metropolitan area and is located on US 41 between I-4 and I-5. Stuart began as a post office in 1875, and was renamed Stuart after General James B. Stuart who fought in the Mexican–American War. The first school was built in 1880, and the first retail store opened in 1903. In 1907, Stuart became an incorporated village with a blacksmith shop as its only business enterprise. In 1940, when World War II began, Stuart's population increased to 1,500 due to the influx of refugees from Cuba and other parts of Latin America who were then living in Tampa Bay Area communities such as Clearwater and Plantation Key neighborhoods near US 41/I-4 interchange. By 1945, when hostilities ended following Japan's surrender, Stewart had declining population levels because many Cuban refugees had returned home while others had taken up permanent residence elsewhere within Polk County or beyond it into adjacent Hillsborough County (now Pinellas County). However, by 1970 Stewart's population had rebounded to 1,626 residents due primarily to new arrivals from Panama City Beach who were seeking jobs in nearby Saint Petersburg during the early 1960s oil boom there; also contributing were some original residents of Stuart who chose not to move away during that time period when their standards of living improved markedly relative to those back East although they still maintain some cultural ties with their old hometown through its annual arts festival which takes place during July weekdays at charming downtown square known locally as "The Square".
