It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Combined Statistical Area. The name "Stuart" comes from two places: Stuart Plantation on its eastern border and Stuart Road running through it. The first place was founded by Major General James Wilkinson in 1763 as a stop on his march from Havana to Pensacola. The second place may have been established by Captain John Stuart who landed there with Colonel James Cook on July 26, 1795 during the First French Empire Expedition under Marquis de Lafayette as part of a punitive expedition against Spanish colonists in what is now Broward County. In 1846, Confederate General Braxton Bragg stationed his army at Stuart for three months while he besieged Fort Brooke on nearby Key Biscayne Peninsula before withdrawing to Earthà Island near Jupiter Inlet after losing many men and supplies due to bad weather and wading through high water caused by Hurricane Flossie that same year. A post office called "Stuart" was established in 1893, and remained in operation until 1959. Stuart, Florida is a town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 1,229 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, it had grown to 1,521 residents. Stuart was founded on December 12th, 1892 by J.H. Stuart and his brother-in-law W.C. Bentley as a post office called "Pine Hill" after the nearby Pine Hills Resort which was then under construction by James Hance and others. In 1911, Pemberton Bolton donated land east of the original post office to make way for a new school district that would be named after him and his wife Minnie reside there with their two children until they died in 1933 when they were succeeded by their son John Fenton Bolton Jr.. On November 3rd 1913, Stroudsville High School opened its doors for students grades 9 through 12 after being built on land donated by Lloyd Eckerstrom and other businessmen in what is now known as East Central Square across from Pine Hill Resort on US 19/27 north of Stuarttown Center (now part of downtown).
