Stuart, Florida is a census-designated place in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stuart was founded on November 10, 1892 by J. B. Stuart and Wm. Fenton as a small farming community named Forneyville after their father-in-law and mentor Will Forney. The name change to Stuart in honor of General Robert E. Lee during World War II when the town became an important military supply center for the war effort in central Florida The original town site was located on what is now Vance Street between US 19W and US 98W (now Brushy Road). A new road was built from here to Fort Brooke Military Base on April 11, 1907 following victory over Spanish forces at Palo Alto Battlefield near present day Pensacola Naval Air Station; this new road served as the basis for State Road 517 which leads south from Stuart to Mobile Bayou (and then Gulfport) today . On February 7, 1913, local citizens voted to annex neighboring unincorporated communities of Live Oak and Belleair into Stuart; these annexations were accepted by Escambia County officials without comment or objection . In 1922, construction began on what would become Stonington Drive which ran parallel to SR 517 within the town limits; this new drive provided direct access to the shopping and dining areas of much of downtown Stonington while bypassing most of older Center Pointe village east of Main Street In 1970, when Escambia County established its current form with its own government and elected officials,[5] Stewart's boundaries expanded westward along US 98W until they met those of Belleair annexed in 1922 (although no physical annexation ever took place). At that time Belleair's population had grown sufficiently large that it requested its own county seat – what would become Pensacola – instead of remaining subordinate to Stewart . This move effectively ended any pretense that Stuart might one day be granted independent status within Escambia County . By 1800, there were at least eighteen settlements in Polk County including Stuart which made up about one-third of its population when Texas became an United States Territory in 1845. The decline of Stuart began immediately after Texas acquired independence from Mexico in 1846. Businesses dried up due to lack of available marketable land and competition from nearby towns that were established during Mexican rule such as Houston and San Antonio. In 1865, most of what is now Stewart had been incorporated into Jacksonville which was thenthe largest city in Florida. This draining effect can be seen today as Jacksonville has lost much of its original downtown character whileStewart has retained some commercial development strengths
