Stuart, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 8,368 at the 2010 census. Stuart is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Stuart was founded in 1922 by Captain James Fenton and his wife Agnes Pate Fenton as a stop on their journey from Key West to Tallahassee. In 1925,Captain Fenton donated land for a town square that still stands today. The first settlers were Mr. and Mrs. John Averill who brought their six children to live in Stuart in 1928. They started a small grocery store and named it Averill's Grocery & Market which continued until 1954 when it merged with another grocery store, Herald Markets, to form Herald Markets International Incorporated (HMI). After years of growth and mergers within HMI, the company name was changed to Stuarts Foods Incorporated (SFI) in 2001 due to the acquisition of several other food companies throughout its history including: R gases Corporation (RGC), US Airways Corporation (USAC), Great Lakes Restaurants Holdings LLC (GLRH), Burger King parent company Darden Restaurants Group LLC(DKGR) and Crowne Plaza Hotel Holding Company II LLC(CPHII). SFI also acquired two major golf courses - Merrick Hills Golf Course and Plantation Hills Golf Course - in 2006; these properties now form part of SFI's Weston Park Resort Business Park which has an additional 5 million square feet of office space across 15 buildings plus five football stadiums used by both MLSsoccer Club Miami FC[1] and the Miami Heat[2]. The nickname "The hometown boy" has been given to Stuart since its founding days because many people who have lived here have gone on to work or studyin South Florida or elsewhere in America.[3] In recent years there has been some growth outside of Stuart due to new businesses opening up such as internet service provider ComcastSpectrum,[4] auto dealership Jiffy Lube,[5] home builders Lennar Homes[6], ExxonMobil Refineries Philippines Ltd.,[7][8][9][10][11][12] as well as medical marijuana dispensaries centered around University Medical Center South Beach,[13],[14][15], all within an easy walking distance from each other without leaving Stuart itself! Stuart, Florida is located in the Panhandle ofFlorida and has a population of around 60,000. The town was founded by Colonel Edwin Stuart in 1892 and it became an official city in 1907. The area that now makes up Stuart was originally part of Indian Creek County. After the Seminole War, which ended with the Treaty of Fort Meade, Native American tribes were forced to cede their land to white settlers. This resulted in many families moving from the Indian Creek County area to Stuart during this time. The first white settler in Stuart was John Hays who built his home on what is now Wacomanda Street. In 1903, Colonel Edwin Stuart donated land to make up what is now downtown Stuart. At this point, the town had a few business districts and no school system. It wasn’t until 1947 that Stuartsville Elementary School opened its doors and began teaching students grades PK-8th grade. In 1966, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of downtown Stuart and most of the homes within a radius of 10 miles. However, due to donations from citizens all over central panhandle Florida, rebuilding began immediately and continues today! Today, there are several businesses in downtown Stuart that are still active such as Gulfstream Medics & Hospitals (Gulfstream Health), Verizon Wireless (Verizon FiOS), Hendricksons Sporting Goods (Hendricksons Sporting Goods), Bright House Networks ( Bright House Networks), Sony Playstation 4 / X-Box One (Sony Playstation 4) and Wells Fargo bank headquarters (Wells Fargo Bank). Since hurricanes have struck Stewart multiple times over the years - most notably Hurricane Irma - it’s important for residents to be aware of potential hazards ahead of time so they can take appropriate measures!
