Stuart, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known references to Stuart were made by Captain James Hernando de Soto in his journal on March 6, 1539. He refers to "a small and unhealthy place" located near present-day Stuart as "Punta Gorda." In 1810 Seminole Chief Osceola mentioned that he had been camping there and that it had been abandoned some time before his arrival. A post office called Stuart was established in 1836, but no shipments of goods arrived there until 1847 when mail from Jacksonville reached Stuartsburg through the Miami River Valley and stopped at the old depot on SR 506 northwest of town. The old depot burned down in 1903 and was replaced by a new one on Forest Road 2 east of town. In 1907 a railroad station was built just north of town on US 69 about two miles west of today's junction of US 17/SR 20 (now Business I-4). Mail from Tampa arrived here for shipment via train to central Florida via Sanford then Onslow Avenue northeast to Winter Park where passengers disembarked at the Orange Beach Lighthouse before continuing northeast along ORANGE BEACH HWY to Fort Myers or vice versa In 1912 local developer Arieh Gaudi proposed building an amusement park on what is now State Road 855 south of town which would have included a riverboat ride and other amusements including an airport with hangars for planes. After much discussion nothing came of this project however Gaudi did establish nearby Lake Wales Resort which became popular with visitors over time A fire destroyed most buildings in downtown Stuart on November 10, 1984 after burning for hours following a spark from an open lighter while several people were inside one building . No one was hurt although many trees were destroyed
