It is an unincorporated community and it does not have its own police force. Sunny Isles Beach is known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The town was founded in 1922 by Harry Weems as a place to ship salt water fish from Key West to Miami-Dade County. After World War II, fishing became Sunny Isles' main industry and the town grew rapidly. In the early 1960s, Sunrise Boulevard was built in order to attract tourists to Sunny Isles Beach. This road became one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Florida because it featured beautiful white sand beaches with crystal clear water that could be seen from any angle. In 1995, Sunrise Boulevard was renamed Ocean Drive in honor of Senator Juan Ponce de León who helped create Broward County which includes Sunny Isles Beach.
