Over time, other groups joined the Methodist Mission: Episcopalians in 1850; Baptists in 1857; Presbyterians in 1860; Methodists in 1865; Congregationalists (Congregationalist churches originated on Long Island) in 1868; Catholics (from Ireland) in 1870; Jews (from Russia) in 1872; Germans (from Germany) in 1875; Italians (from Italy) in 1880; and Mormons (Mormons arrived from Utah during the American Civil War). With so many newcomers came new diseases: smallpox killed many converts to Christianity while yellow fever decimated Indian populations around Tampa Bay. Despite this fact, some residents decided that living close to nature was what made their town special – they built summer homes on mangroves or along dunes overlooking Clearwater Harbour. As America rapidly transitioned from an agricultural society into an industrial one during the late 19th century, jobs opened up for seafarers and fishermen who could no longer fish or sail ontoshore because of regulations against shipbuilding at that time.
