In 1971, Sunrise Boulevard was built parallel to US 1 extending into Biscayne Bay to provide a direct route between downtown Miami and Sunrise Boulevard's shopping district on Biscayne Boulevard. The bypassed neighborhoods along Sunrise Boulevard became known as "the Sunset Strip" because they were where most of the high-end apartments and businesses were located before light rail arrived in Sunnyside in the early 1990s. In 2003, Hurricane Wilma caused extensive damage to Sunnyside Beach but no injuries or fatalities occurred as a result; however some homes sustained serious damage including broken windows and lost roofing tiles which allowed water inside during heavy rains. Since then development has been slow due to concerns about mold growth in older homes which has had ToeJam & Earl’s store relocated to nearby Lighthouse Point since 2006 due to rising sea levels making many homes unsellable or unusable above ground with only limited access below ground with flooding potential; allowing extensive looting throughout the year during storm periods especially when police are not available or when there are large crowds present which can lead to violence Many businesses have closed completely while others have had to reduce hours due lack of customers or sales during bad weather conditions This has led many people who live nearby now call themselves "The Flooded Streets."
