Sunrise, Florida is a small town located in the heart of the panhandle of Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The history of Sunrise, Florida is a long and colorful one. The area that now includes Sunrise has been inhabited by the Seminole people for centuries, and in 1819 the U.S. government bought the land from them in order to create Fort Brooke as part of the military's "Indian Removal" campaign. The fort was built on a small island in Lake Okeechobee, and it served as a base for American Indian scouts and soldiers during the 19th century. In 1903, Ft. Brooke was redesignated Fort Worth National Military Park, which remains an active duty installation today. In 1933, Sunrise became part of Broward County after it was chosen as the site of county government under Florida's new constitution. At that time, Sunrise consisted of only a few buildings on Dogpatch Hill Road near present-day Pembroke Pines. Development quickly began at what is now Sunrise Center mall, which opened in 1957 and remains one of South Florida's most iconic tourist destinations today. After World War II ended in 1945, many Floridians left for work in nearby cities or abroad; however, someresidential development continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s at Dogpatch Hill Road/Pembroke Pines with modest results until 1967 when developers started anew with more ambitious plans including office towers (the first being One Meridian), shopping malls (Sunrise Centre), and a new stadium called Raymond James Stadium that would become home to both Miami Dolphins football games and bowl games between Miami Hurricanes football teams (later renamed University of Miami). During this time also several major changes took place within Broward County: It became more diverse through population growth among various racial groups; its borders were redrawn following passage ofBroward County vierges case - an act by then-Governor Lawton Chiles - making it one unit with other counties throughout much of South Florida; local governments were created across rural areas outside Broward County boundaries; functions such as building inspections were transferred from state government to county government; annexation into other counties occurred primarily due to land reclamation efforts on behalf of municipalities located adjacent to municipalitiesnewly formed within Broward County - usually those along metropolitan lines - see also Villages annexed by Broward County . However no major redevelopment project ever spearheaded by either county government succeeded beyond preliminary planning stages until 1990 when Mayor Rick Scott announced plans for Suncoast Drive / I-95 corridor connecting downtown Coral Gables with North Lauderdale/Fort Lauderdale International Airport would finally bring answers not just to questions about how more than $2 billion had been spent but also about who should control these developments once they are completed
The Sunrise Peninsula was first settled by the Kissimmee Seminoles in the late eighteenth century. The area now known as Sunrise was part of Spanish Florida until independence was granted to the United States in 1821. By 1835, the region had become a key stop on Road to Pensacola and its agricultural produce became an important source of income for early settlers. In 1853, one of the first hotels in Sunrise opened its doors, and by 1860, Sunrise had reached a population of about 100 residents. In 1898, during World War I, US Marines landed at Sunrise beach to take position along the Gulf Coast. The Marines engaged in combat from here until 1919 when they left for Red Beach near Tampa Bay. In 1936, following annexation of Florida by the United States, sunrise became a municipality within Sunrise County. The town's population continued to grow through the years with expansions into housing development and retailing opportunities; however, it would not be until after Hurricane Floyd struck in September 1969 that villagehood status would be bestowed upon sunrise. A 2005 study conducted by University Park Biomedical Laboratory found that climate change is likely affecting human health throughout Central Florida Climate change has already caused marked changes in local vegetation patterns and soil types across much of this region over recent decades and more rapid changes are expected as temperatures increase
