Sunrise, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,028 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in Sunrise came from Haiti in 1820 and they named it "Port du Sud." A trading post called "Sunrise" was established by Nicholas Longo and his family on a peninsula near what is now Sunrise Boulevard and NW 75th Street in 1841. French settlers arrived in the area following the American Revolution and named it Pointe-à-Callière after a peak on Jupiter's moon Io. The name change was made official on July 1, 1845 when King Louis XV of France gave authority for Spanish colonists to rename areas within their global empire as CDPs after geographic features or natural objects. In 1912, local developers organized an election to establish boundaries for CDPs within Palm Beach County which resulted in Sunrise becoming part of Palm Beach Gardens CDP. In 1925, Sunrise Voters Chosen Committee recommended renaming the community “Sunsite” after American astronomer Edwin Armstrong who discovered Venus during his South Pole mission that year. After much public discussion, commissioners voted 6-2 to accept “Sunsite” as the new name for Sunrise despite objections from some boosters who wanted to keep the name “Portdu Sud” because they felt its use would promote tourism around town rather than scientific research which was being conducted at nearby Stonington Park School District school facilities at that time. In 1955, Sunbeam Corporation founded a citrus plantation south of present day Sunrise Boulevard where they developed what is now known as Sunbeam City Center shopping center while operations of Sunrise Elementary School continued until 1976; however property tax rates were raised from 2¢ per $100 worth of assessed value up to 7¢ per $200 worth of assessment value effective January 1st 1957 making sunrise an unincorporatedarea with no governing body other than individual homeowners operating through their individual homeowner associations dues paying residents assigned by these organizations pursuant to cooperative agreement between homeowners groups entered into by respective members prior thereto . On November 3rd 1959 sunset Community Association Incorporated formed doing business under the name "Sunset Heights Homeowners Association" with first meeting held December 12th 1959 . Sunset High School opened its doors September 5th 1960 with grades 8 thru 11 serving students from east side streets adjacent to Sunbeam City Center shopping center including: Meridian Road (north), Horizon Drive (south), Academy Road (west), Coral Way (east). With school open enrollment tripled Previously only enrolling children living east side street addresses could attend schools located west of Meridian Rd., north of Horizon Dr., south of Academy Rd., east of Coral Way were SUNSET HOMES SCHOOL DISTRICT pupils attending those schools were disciplined by parents or guardian for not having attended such schools during morning hours instead playing outside along street sidewalks During afternoon hours all pupils attending SUNSET HOMES SCHOOL DISTRICT were disciplined by parents or guardian for playing inside instead inside home

The Sunrise area was first settled by the Seminole Indian tribe in 1795. The town of Sunrise was founded in 1851 as a result of land sales made by Governor Arthur Godfrey. In 1978, the village formed into a county and changed its name to Monroe County. From 1940 until 1971, when it joined the United States mainland as part of the military post- liberation zone following World War II, Islamorada was an unincorporated community within Monroe County. In 1972, after years of negotiations between county commissioners and local residents led by then-Commissioner Don Nehlen, Islamorada became an unincorporated community again under internal ordinance number 822-1972 which designated sunrise as its legal name. Muslims were already living there for centuries before that date; however Ramadan is considered to be their holiest month according to Islamic law so this designation reflected their history and traditions more than anything else."
