The community started as a small farming village in the early 1920s when citrus trees were first planted thereabouts. It became an agricultural center with a water tower that served all of southern Miami-Dade County until 1955; then it became a bedroom community for south Dade County. Sunrise, Florida is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,663 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood metropolitan area. The first European to set eyes on Sunrise was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1513 when he sailed along the east coast of Cuba as part of his exploration of that country and its potential for colonization. He named it "Verrazano" after himself and Spanish explorer João de Deus Vaz de Camargo. In 1821, a group of Seminole Indians led by Tipu Sultan moved from their winter home near Benin City in Georgia to establish what would become Sunrise. They were assisted by Captain John Stroud who became their leader and guide. In 1824, they created an independent nation called "Seminole Nation." One year later, Captain Stroud died while exploring northern Florida's panhandle region; his death marked the end of Seminole Nation's sovereignty over Sunrise. The U S government purchased land adjacent to present-day Sunrise from the Seminoles in 1828 for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $). This purchase followed years of negotiations between the U S Department of Indian Affairs and the Seminole Tribe about land concessions within Indian Territory which had been acquired from them through warfare and treaties dating back to 1776. When American citizens first started arriving in large numbers during Reconstruction era (1868-1912), many menial jobs opened up as soon as railroad facilities arrived in town such as blacksmithing, wagon repair/tireless driving services etcetera; these menial positions often went unappreciated by white people who saw them only as sources of manual labor necessary for infrastructure development projects likeroads and bridges etcetera. However this did not stop local businesses owners or residents from using these menial jobs for their own personal gain until World War II when wartime production requisitioned many skilled workers like welders etcetera out of town and sent those locals instead into military production plants where they were vulnerable to exploitation due to lack thereof safety regulations then prevailing at that time among employers
