The Coast Guard was founded on December 25, 1915 in Sunrise, Florida. The first Coast Guard station was established at Fort Myers Beach. The original mission of the Coast Guard was to protect the coastal communities from pirates and smugglers. In 1951, the Coast Guard moved its Headquarters to Miami and began providing maritime security for the Coral Gables area. In 1958, the Coast Guard opened a new Headquarters in West Palm Beach which became home to both local and national agencies that responded to emergencies across the U.S. The newest facility addition is located on Collins Road in Fort Lauderdale whichopened in 2011 as part of an overall renovation of 1 marina totaling over $100 million dollars. In 1987, the first cutter patrol boat was purchased by the Coast Guard and named after Rear Admdr John Boggs who commanded US Naval Squadron Eight during World War II when he served as commanding officer of Patrol Boat PT-509 USS Ponce (VP-8) sailing out of Key Largo Harbor on May 3rd off Key West, Fla.. Upon his death in 1990 Rear Admdr Robert Smeaton assumed command of Patrol Boat PT-755 USS Somers (ASW-5) patrolling near Stonington Island off Sebastian County, Conn., becoming America’s firstever coast guard petty officer commander with operational responsibility for all operating assets afloat within 50 miles of shoreline! On July 14th 1994 Rear Admdr James Fenton assumed command of Patrol Boat PT-758 USCGC Comfort (CG-87) patrolling off Santa Monica Pier following a collision between two commercial vessels

Sunrise, Florida is a small town in central Florida that has been around for over 100 years. The town is known for its beautiful beaches and friendly people. Sunrise was founded by two brothers, John and Harry Waite. It started as a tiny farming community and now has a population of just over 1,000 residents. The Waites were the first white people to live in Sunrise when they arrived in 1906. They built their homes on the edge of the beach where they could see the ocean. The Waites served as mayors of Sunrise from 1916 to 1936 and 1948 to 1960. The original town hall was destroyed in a fire in 1951 but it was rebuilt with help from local volunteers. In 1984, the town voted to become an incorporated municipality which helped increase its economy and popularity. In 2002, Sunrise became part of Alachua County which made it easier for residents to get services like police officers and ambulance service. Thanks to its gorgeous beaches, friendly people, and great history, Sunrise is one of the most popular towns in central Florida!

The Coast Guard was first appointed as a militia force in 1796, and began operations as an actual department of government in 1807. In 1915, the Commandant of the Coast Guard was given responsibility for all law enforcement on and off the coast. The duties of the Coast Guard have grown over time and today it is one of America’s most important emergency services. The history of Coast Guard gift giving can be traced back to 1916 when Rear Admiral John A. Fiske designed and instituted the Christmas Gift Fund which allowed individuals or families to give money to charity during December. From that point on, gifts from members of the public were common throughout the year with donations reaching up to $1,000 per year by 1941. Since then, there have been many changes and improvements made to how Coast Guardsmen receive their holiday gifts including accepting credit cards through PayPal or even directly through branch commanders. By the turn of the century, Sunrise had become a thriving community with businesses such as clapboard stores, mills, and warehouses. Due to its location on Long Key Peninsula and its close proximity to Jacksonville, Sunrise became an important commercial center for both Florida and southern Alabama during this time. In 1907, Sunrise hosted the first international auto show in south Florida. During World War II, Sunrise played an important role in supplying food for military troops stationed throughout Florida and Georgia. After the war ended, many of the original businessmen returned to Sunrise but new businesses quickly sprang up in order to keep up with rapidly changing technology and industry in today's world. Today, Sunrise is one of those small towns that has managed to stay afloat through hard times while still retaining its proud local identity - something that has made it one of our favorite places to live hereabouts!
Sunrise, Florida was founded on November 3, 1872 by J.B. Stevens and W.H. Thomas as a small community located in Marion County, Florida. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Stonington River and its proximity to both Tampa and Jacksonville. By 1888, Sunrise had reached a population of approximately 350 people and it became an incorporated municipality with its own government within one year. In 1912, Sunrise was renamed for General George Custer after his death in battle at Little Bighorn
