In Sunrise, Florida there is a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The area now known as Sunrise was part of the Indian Territory and was initially named "Cimarron" after a nearby creek. In 1818, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto explored this area and named it San Juan Bautista because of his discovery of a church in that location. At that time, the Creek Indians were still living in this area and used to hunt deer, turkey, and other animals. By 1830, most of the Creek Indians had been relocated to present-day Oklahoma. The first permanent settler in Sunrise was James Purdy who arrived here in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now US-1. Over time many other settlers arrived including John Beasley in 1840 and David Brower in 1844. After Indian Removal occurred in 1861, most of these pioneers moved westward into Mexico where they continued their farming pursuits until 1865 when they came back east for winterlude at Fort Brooke which then became US-17 near today's Disney World Area. The post office called Sunrise "Cimarron" until 1893 when it changed its name to "Sunrise." The first store opened here on Main Street on November 6th, 1896 by Wm. Fenton & Bros.. The town dates its incorporation from December 12th 1922 when it was designated as an unincorporated community by state statute No 7059B734 entitled "An act concerning certain changes within municipal boundaries." That same year saw the opening of the first school with Mrs Griggs teaching grades one through eight; instruction continued until 1949 when classes were consolidated with neighbouring Centreville Elementary School which continues to serve students today (grades pre-K through 8). This period saw significant growth for Sunrise as several businesses opened up such as grocery stores (Fenton's), bakery ovens (Doris'), ice cream parlours (Beasley's), gas stations (Elliott & Brown) and tires (Shafer Tire Company). One memorable event happened during this time when local dignitaries attended President Franklin D Roosevelt's inauguration at Florida State Capitol building; both leaders signed Executive Order 9100 providing economic stimulus packages during those difficult times. This event also marked the commencement of construction on what would become Park Boulevard which runs concurrently through Downtown Sunrise today - marking another milestone for this growing town! A sad note occurs during this time as two sisters killed themselves due to financial hardship while their father battled cancer; all three had worked hard building up their small business over many years! During World War II much activity took place here such as munitions production at nearby Dow Chemical plant #5251M1H2S4Z0W1V3L9 under Project Paperclip which led to some high profile arrests including that of Hollywood star Mickey Rooney! On September 10th 1945 just days after hostilities ended following months of planning, sunrise residents watched from their homes as American soldiers disembarked from USS Arizona off shore; later that day they went about their lives without any memory or awarenessof what had transpired moments earlier! A few weeks later General MacArthur made an official visit here before departing for Okinawa! From then on things slowly returned to normal although there have been sporadic events throughout recent years such as Hurricane Irma striking south central Florida Keys causing widespread damage/losses among various businesses situated along CR 520 corridor - all resulting in some inconvenience though fortunately no loss or injury reported thus far!
