The first coffee place was called the Sunrise Coffee Shop and it was located at 1114 Estero Rd. It served coffee to residents of Sunrise and its surrounding area. The store closed in 1951 but continued to serve as a popular tourist spot for locals and visitors alike. In 1976, The Gourmet Coffee Company was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wessels and they opened their first restaurant in Sunrise called Robert's Café which became a favorite stop for tourists and locals alike. After years of successful business, the couple decided to sell their restaurant in 1991 but continued to operate it as a popular tourist spot until their death in 2000. In 2006, The Gourmet Coffee Company reopened under new ownership after being dormant for many years. They continue to serve delicious coffee drinks made fresh daily from their own beans while also keeping the same menu that has been synonymous with the company since its inception. The coffee house became a popular stop for locals and visitors alike, and became known for its fresh java and delicious pastries. In 1914, Mrs. Lillian Weldon purchased Fernandez's Coffee House property and began serving breakfast until 3pm each day. From then on, Mrs. Weldon's Café was known as the Sunrise Gourmet Coffee Shop. In 1951, Don Fowler acquired the café property from Mrs. Weldon, and continued to serve coffee until he closed it in 1978. The cafés legacy continues today with several different owners who continue to offer delicious coffee at their properties throughout Sunrise!
Sunrise, Florida is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,253 at the 2010 census. Sunrise is located on the southeastern border of Monroe County and is bordered by Lakeland to the north and east, Live Oak to the south-southwest, and Immokalee to the west. The community began as a small farming village founded in 1887 by Methodist missionaries. It grew rapidly during World War II as military personnel stationed throughout Southern Florida moved into Sunrise for work. After the war ended, many more people moved into Sunrise; it became one of Monroe County's fastest-growing communities. The area now comprising Sunrise was first settled in 1892 when James Wetherbee bought land from a Indian tribe for $8 per acre (2 hectares). In 1916 an agreement was made between the United States government and local farmers that would allow USGLC to develop land near Sunrise along with other citrus plantations in Monroe County. In 1924 USGLC merged with Miami Fruit Company to become GFCO–USGLC. In 1933 GFCO–USGLC merged with JLB Corporation to form JLB–JFCO (later JLL). In 1948 JRB Holding Company acquired all of USGLC's assets except its citrus holdings which were divided among several different owners before being sold off again in 1957. During this time period also restyled many buildings including renamed First National Bank after then president Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal initiative – "First National Banks For All Americans". In 1990 First American Financial Corporation purchased majority ownership of JRB Holdings Company from its original owners for $1 billion making it one of largest banks ever acquired by a private corporation at that time. In 2003 merger talks between Citigroup Incorporated and JP Morgan Chase & Co., were said to be heating up but no deal had been reached when Citigroup announced they would sell their shareholding back to JPMorgan Chase & Co.. On January 17th 2009 JP Morgan Chase &Co agreed not pursue any further mergers or acquisitions until after their own internal review found there may have been improper dealings during their takeover attempt of Citigroup Incorporated
