The Sunrise community in central Florida was founded by Seminole Indian hunters and their white partners in 1835. The area that includes the town of Sunrise, now part of Kissimmee, was first leased from the Seminoles by a group of landowning owners in 1836. The 1,000-acre (400-hectare) tract became known as "the reservation." In 1839, when the United States acquired Florida, Sunrise became one of its initial settlements. In 1862, the US military built Fort Brooke on the reservation to protect settlers from Seminole raiding parties. The fort was renamed Fort Brooke State Park in 1925 after Major General John W. Cooke III who served as Commandant at Fort Brooke from 1865 to 1889 and who is best remembered for his role in suppressing Seminole raids near Fort Brooke. From 1860 until 1966, Sunrise had its own school board which functioned concurrently with the Broward County public Schools system. On July 12th, 1922 Sunrise's first store opened its doors and began selling goods directly to residents. In 1946, when Broward County was created from parts of Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County, sunrise became part ofbroward county along with other communities located east of I-95 such as Miramar and Pompano Beach
In 1837, the first settlers in Sunrise, Florida arrived. The town was founded on a tract of land that had been granted by the Spanish government to José de la Cruz y Asís. The town was named for José de la Cruz, who served as its first mayor. In 1838, the town plat was filed and by 1840, Sunrise had a population of six residents. In 1853, Sunrise became part of Jacksonville County and in 1865 it became part of Miami County. In 1898, Sunrise lost its status as a county seat when it merged with Miami into Broward County. In 1922, Sunrise regained its status as a county seat when it joined Palm Beach County. In 1959, Sunrise became an incorporated city subject toBroward County jurisdiction.
