Sunrise, Florida is a town in the panhandle of Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Marion County and was founded on October 3, 1867 by pioneers who were attracted to its natural resources. The post office at Sunrise was first established on November 1, 1868. The first settlers in Sunrise were John A. Salisbury and his family who located on the north side of the creek that now forms Commerce Street. In 1870 James Witherspoon settled in Sunrise and he raised cotton until his death in 1896. Harry Laughlin also set up home there around this time before moving to Fort Myers. From 1898-1904, both sunrise and Fort Myers were part of Seminole County when it was organized from parts of Choctaw Nation land east of Tampa Bay. On February 15, 1907, a fire destroyed most of town with no one loss reported; it is still considered the worst fire in town's history The original post office building still stands today as a private residence; it served as an early music school for children and has been used as a church since 1925 On May 2nd 1912, founder John Salisbury donated $5000 to establish Sunrise Education Foundation which provides pre-kindergarten through grade 12 education for underprivileged children living within walking distance of Sunrise In 1916 local developer Orlando Hite donated land adjacent to present day Sunrise Boulevard for what would become Floridas State Fairgrounds In 1951 Sunsets new shopping center opened adjacent to Interstate 95 just outside Of MilkyWay Road while nearby Pompano Beach developed into one of South Floridas largest resorts following World War II . In 1978 an amusement park called Suncoast opened adjacent to I-95 near Polaris Avenue making Sunrise once again a center for tourism
