The National Guard in Sunrise, Florida has been part of the local community for over a hundred years. In 1941, the first National Guard unit was organized in Sunrise by Captain Harry G. Sneath and Colonel John Waddell. From then on, the National Guard has played an important role in Sunrise as both a militia and a peacekeeping force. The history of the National Guard in Sunrise goes back to 1907 when representatives from ten states met at Fort Myers to discuss forming a national guard unit. The meeting was successful and soon more states were added to the original ten. On December 12th, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an act authorizing the creation of a national guard brigade in each state. The brigades were modeled after army units and became operational on October 1st 1908. In 1941, Captain Harry G Sneath organized the first unit in Sunrise with eighteen men. This is also when sunrise activated its own military police department which remains today active as one of only two such departments in Palm Beach County (the other being Coconut Creek). The battalion served during World War II with distinction including participation in Normandy and Northern France; earning awards such as the George Cross for bravery under fire (the highest award available at that time). After World War II ended,Captain Sneath moved his battalion Headquarters to Ft Myers where they remained until 1959 when they relocated again - this time permanently - to Sunrise where they remain today! The members of the National Guard have played an important role not just locally but throughout southern Florida since 1911- present day! Memorial Day weekend sees nationally televised appearances by members of our armed forces from all across America who are visiting us as part of their “service tour” – something that is truly unique within our community! It should be noted that while most soldiers and marines visit us primarily during Memorial Day Weekend we also have several other events taking place throughout town on this special holiday weekend (see link below for details!).
