Sunrise, Florida is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 6,821 at the 2000 census. The town has an active community spirit and a strong sense of civic pride. Sunrise is known for its beautiful beaches, wide variety of culture, historical landmarks, and friendly people. The first residents of Sunrise were people from Georgia who came to the area during the Seminole Wars in 1835. In 1868, a post office was established in Sunrise with the name of Fort Brooke because General Worth Postmaster General James Buchanan had used Fort Brooke as his headquarters during the American Civil War. In 1916, Sunrise became an incorporated municipality and adopted a new city charter that provided for elected officials and other village-like features. In 1936, after being annexed by Monroe County from neighboring Stonington Township, Sunrise again became an incorporated municipality under its own charter. Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1936, Sunrise has experienced significant growth within the community itself as well as outside of it through annexation by other municipalities including Jacksonville (2002), Miami Beach (2007), Port Canaveral (2012), Hollywood (2015) and Clearwater (2018). Unexploded ordnance discovered near Sunset Boulevard beach may have played a role in this growth; however no evidence suggests that any harm resulted to either population or environment from these discoveries. A total of $2 million was invested into development projects announced between 2018-2022 which plans to create over 100 jobs throughout the community while also repairing infrastructure such as sidewalks and streetlights. Many residents continue to support their local government despite some challenges such as long wait times for services like policing or fire suppression due to budget cuts made by previous administrations. Despite these disparities though there are many aspects where both communities work together successfully - such as joint fundraising events which bring money together from various businesses in order to support local causes

In 1990 Sunrise merged with neighboring Plantation Heights to form the current city of Sunrise.
