Sunrise, Florida is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Sunrise is part of the Gainesville-Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a small farming village on a peninsula formed by two rivers that converge near where Marco Island now stands. In 1887, Poultney Scribner and his brother Lewis founded the Scribners’ Store in what became known as Sunrise. The store became an important center for trade and social intercourse within the village until it closed in 1924 when Progress Communications Company built its own store on the same site. In 1925, developer Harry Haggerty purchased development rights to what would become Sunrise from the Scribners’ Store owners and proceeded to build a large farmstead on the property which he named Haggerty Farms after himself and his wife Eleanor (née Gibbs). Sunrise soon became one of Florida's most popular tourist destinations due to its beautiful setting, diverse attractions, friendly people, and unique architecture. In 1956, Sunrise underwent major renovation which included restoration of many of its original buildings including the old schoolhouse which served as both local government offices and a hotel until it burned down in 1960; new churches such as First Presbyterian (1956), Methodist (1960), Baptist (1965), Jehovah's Witnesses (1966), Catholic (1968) and Pentecostal(1969) Churches; new shopping streets such as Main Street (open since 1951); new recreational areas including Sunset Park Golf Course; severalnew high schools including North Monroe High School (1962), West Monroe High School annexe(1970), Pinellas County Agricultural Academy annexe(1971) ;and Parx Preschool Annexe(1972). A total of $2 million was spent between 1957-1973 renovating all aspects of Sunrise including demolition/replacement of existing structures; acquisition or construction of land; installation/maintaining of public works equipment and facilities; purchase or leaseof new equipment necessary for municipality's continued operation.; diurnal variation analysis to determine climatological impact on economic activity

Sunrise, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Sunrise was founded on December 15, 1925 by Johnnie B. Armstrong and his wife Fannie Mae Armstrong. The community was named after Sunrise Point on the mainland of Key West,Florida which is also the location of Armstrong's ancestral home. The Armstrong family operated a grocery store and post office in Sunrise from its establishment until 1959 when they sold the business to Mabel Webb and her husband Harry Liddle. In 1959, Webb managed to get an appropriation for land in Sunrise that would become their private golf course. She also built the first high school in South Florida and opened it in 1962. In 1984, Sunrise voted to secede from Miami-Dade County and became its own municipality with its own government buildings and allocating its own funding for local services such as fire departments and police officers. In 1990, sunrise adopted a new constitution which gave more autonomy to its municipality including control over taxes, public works spending, zoning regulations, and municipal elections.
