The station helped develop Panamanian ports as key choke points for Allied shipping during World War II. Today Sunrise is home to many businesses including banks, restaurants and hotels. It is also known for its annual baseball game between Panamanian teams called "The Big Apple" (or "Stripes") and US teams called "The Stars".
