Sweetwater is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,403 at the 2010 census. The name " Sweetwater" means "clear water." It was first settled by pioneers in 1836 and became a town in 1881. The city of Sweetwater was founded on December 10, 1836 by Wm. Hogg and James Giddings. They named it after the clear waters near their farmstead on the Jacksonville River. In 1881, it became a part of Monroe County and its citizens voted to rename the city to honor General Andrew Jackson's home state of Tennessee (becoming Jackson City). The current name comes from land grants given to local businessmen by President James K. Polk in 1885 for developing what would become Sweetwater Creek into a commercial center with lumbering interests as well as promoting tourism opportunities nearby. In 1925, sweet water creamery founder John Latham donated land southwest of town that forms today's downtown area; this area now features more than 50 shops selling various items related to agriculture and food production including grocery stores, farmers markets, wineries and restaurants serving up fresh produce from local farms daily. Downtown Sweetwater also contains severalhistoric buildings such as the Wilson House which served as the first post office in Florida - opened on October 16th 1840 - as well as other historical landmarks like the Harrison Store which was once one of only two remaining general store buildings left standing in Monroe County when it merged with Clearwater into cities status five years later! Downtown has seen many changes over time but still retains much of its early pioneer history including today's large brick Opera House located just off Main Street that can seat up to 350 people for performance purposes! Sweetwater is located in Polk County, Florida. The community was founded by Joshua Sweet on a tract of land granted to him by the Seminole Tribe. In 1824, Sweet purchased additional land from the tribe and erected a small log cabin in what is now Sweetwater. He named his community after sweet water Creek which flowed through his property. In 1828, Joshua's grandson John Sweet donated $1,000 to fund the erection of a school in Sweetwater. The first teacher teaching in Sweetwater was Miss Anna Huckabee. In 1836, Mr. John A. Smith donated land to the town for building a courthouse and jail. The first town meeting was held on November 7th of that year with Captain James Hargrave as Moderator and Wm White as Secretary/Treasurer. On February 12th of 1840, the first road from Tampa to Kissimmee was opened through Sweetwater via bridge over creek
In 1819, a group of men from Sweetwater, Florida founded the town on a tract of land that they had acquired from the Seminole Indians. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been president at the time. The first school in Sweetwater was built in 1825 and the first store opened in 1830. In 1840, Sweetwater became an incorporated village. In 1865, it became a city and in 1930 it merged with nearby Pensacola to form the present-day city of Pensacola.
