Sweetwater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Sweetwater's economy is based on agriculture and ranching. The town was founded in 1892 by John Sweet and his family as a stop on the old Powell Road between Sanford and Kissimmee. In 1906, Sweetwater became a city when it annexed territory from Sanford. The city's first mayor was Wm Hendershot. In 1935, the US Coast Guard established an air station in Sweetwater to provide refueling for American fighter jets during World War II. The station remained operational until 1954 when it was closed down due to budget cuts by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1958, the University of Central Florida opened its new campus in Sweetwater after purchasing land from the state government for $2 million dollars. At that time, it was America's second university located in an agricultural community outside of major cities; Orlando had been opening schools earlier and Gainesville had become a larger city). The university has continued to grow since then with campuses located in Kissimmee (1999), Sanford (2008),Lakeland (2010) and Clearwater (2013). The townspeople have also played an important role in establishing or maintaining many local businesses including Texas Instruments Incorporated (), JCPenney Corporation (), Applebee's restaurant (), wells Fargo Bank (). In 2000, they donated land to form Citizens Park which now includes several baseball diamonds,,a playground/,and two tennis courts/. In 2006 they donated another parcel of land to Citizens Park which contains two more baseball diamonds,,a playground/,and three tennis courts/. Sweetwater was founded in 1851 by Captain John Sweetwater and his companions, who set out from Jacksonville, Florida on a raft to find a new home for themselves. They named their new settlement after the sweet water that flowed through the area. The community thrived for years due to its fertile soil and natural resources, but during the 1930s it faced serious challenges. In 1933, Hurricane Andrew struck the area and caused extensive damage. Many of Sweetwater's buildings were destroyed or damaged, but the community spirit remained strong and continues to thrive today.
