Sweetwater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Monroe City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was John Means who arrived in 1847. Means built his home on the original Town Lake site and named it after himself. The first post office was established in 1851 and became known as "Moses" due to its location near the old Methodist church. A store and hotel were built on Main Street in 1853 by local businessman Isaac Merritt, which remain extant today as Sweetwater Hotel & Cattle Market. In 1865, Jethro Gibbs settled a large tract of land east of town along Umatilla Creek, now known as Gibbs Landing Rd., which eventually became Sweetwater Township. In 1881, Andrew Hickey platted what is now Sweetwater Village into blocks he called "Hickey's Prairie". The name stuck and has been used ever since for the village located off Race Road (now State Road 9). In 1912-13, a small dam was constructed at Big Creek to improve water supplies for sweet water users nearby and also create irrigation potential for sugarcane farmers north of sweet water; this project became known as "The Ditch". In 1920-21 Winton Longacre conducted an experimental corn planting program on 640 acres near present day Edwards ChapelRoad; this project later led to development of longacre agriculture throughout Monroe County In 1927-28 Walton Hargrave began construction on what would become Pompano Beach Boulevard south of town; this roadway remains today as one of most famous thoroughfares in Jacksonville On November 14th 1928 Hurricane Gus made landfall just south of Sweetwater with winds up to 110 mph (175 km/h); within minutes almost all structures had been destroyed or damaged withinSweetwaterVillage including both stores and homes; only 3 people were killed outright with widespread damage across much of northern Monroe County Although damage was extensive many businesses reopened within days following reinsurance from Miami Mutual Casualty Company; these initial efforts failed to save any structures from destruction . By early 1930 most structures had been repaired or replaced but some still suffered from lack of accessibility and poor condition . Reconstruction began immediately with major rebuilding jobs starting downtown including reconstruction of municipal buildings followed by renovation/updates to existing schools , churches etc.; however some businesses refused help citing lack thereof resources . One business that did participate fully was Clarence Weinstock’s Clothing store which reopened June 1933 despite having lost nearly all its inventory during hurricane Gustav .. Many residents returned home during reconstruction while others continued living elsewhere until finally returning home in 1945 when SS]Winton Longacre announced plans for neighborhoodwide redevelopment culminating with incorporation into town
