Sweetwater is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Sweetwater were the Filmore brothers who founded what is now Sweetwater on November 12, 1881. The first post office was established in Sweetwater on December 3, 1881. According to the 2000 Census, there were 1,527 residents in Sweetwater when it incorporated as a municipality on January 5th of that year. In 1990, references were made to possible annexation by Kissimmee which would have put the entire city within Sanford-Rochester Hills MetroParks boundaries and would have added an additional 6,000 residents to the area; however no annexation occurred and Kissimmee instead became a town. In 2001 City Councilman John Sohmer proposed annexing into Sanford-Rochester Hills but this proposal also never came to fruition due to some disagreements between Mayor Tom Barrett and City Hall over land use plans for both cities combined. Today Sweetwater has become known as one of America's most Hispanic communities with nearly 50% Mexican Americans living in it according to 2010 Census data. Sweetwater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sweetwater became a townsite in 1892 when two small villages amalgamated to create the town of Kissimmee. The first post office was established in 1893. The name "Sweetwater" derives from the fact that sugarcane and other crops were grown there until about 1880. In 1886, John Hogg (a settler) purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of Kissimmee on what is now State Road 190A. He named it "Hogg's Grove". A sawmill and gristmill operated near Sweetwater from 1887 to 1915; they are still extant today as Historic landmarks in their own right. In 1903, Harry Wills built his home on what is now Granny Smith Lane and offered shares of stock to members of his family for $5 each share. Sweetwater is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,594 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Sweetwater were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1763. They named the settlement "New Amsterdam" after New Netherland, then part of Holland. The original post office was established in 1771 and changed its name to "Sweetwater" on July 1, 1814. A steamboat landing was developed here for shipping goods and passengers between Jacksonville and Pensacola before railroad access reached Sweetwater in 1886. In 1893, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army destroyed all crops grown near Gainesville by burning their fields; Sweetwater could not escape this devastation because it lay within rifle range of Union artillery batteries stationed at nearby Fort Donelson. The loss of these crops led to a decline in Forge Valley's population from 797 in 1895 to 524 in 1900 due to factors such as joblessness and low wages during World War I (although sweet water still produced some corn). However, Forge Valley bounced back with new businesses starting up during the1920s which brought more jobs until WWII when mills closed due to bombing raids that destroyed much of what had been built since Reconstruction-much like Gainesville had done two decades earlier.
