Sweetwater, Florida has been a gun-friendly community for many years. In 1978, the first concealed carry permit was issued in the area. Gun sales have increased steadily over the years and today, Sweetwater is one of the most firearms friendly communities in Florida.
Sweetwater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Sweetwater comes from the native Apalachicola people who lived there for centuries before being displaced by European settlers in the early 1800s. When Spanish explorers discovered this area in 1565, they named it "Las Truces" (the rides), after a nearby mountain range. A post office called Sweetwater was established in 1824 and became a village on November 6 of that year. The first store opened in 1828 and the first school in 1830. In 1836, sweet potatoes were discovered near Sweetwater and soon after an agricultural settlement sprung up to grow them; however, no one built a house around them because they were too expensive to build with logs only available during winter months when transportation was difficult or impossible to get to otherwise. In 1924, developers bought land north of Sweetwater and developed what would become Jacksonville into an upscale city known for its white sandy beaches and lush vegetation; however, development never took place because most of the people living near Sweetwater wanted their own little community instead of becoming involved with new residents who started moving into their dwellings more than 10 years earlier. In 1959, developer Waddell Laughlin purchased remaining land south of Sweetwater from original owners Fenton & Sons Paper Company for $8 million dollars which he used to create what is now known as Jacksonville’s oldest shopping mall – The Jacksonville Landing – housing over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck and JCPenney as well as restaurants including Carl’s Jr., Ruby Tuesday’s and Olive Garden among others dating back to 1960 when it opened as Parrish Plaza Shopping Center off Interstate 95 just east of downtown Jacksonville proper (renamed First National Bank Park following its acquisition by JPL Corporation). Finally on December 12th 2009 City Council approved Plans for renovation/update/upgrade/new construction of Village Green Elementary School located adjacent to Riverwalk Promenade which will include demolition/ reconstruction of original school building(s) along with addition/replacement thereof with modern facilities designed specifically for use by Schools within sweet water... [This] will provide much-needed educational opportunities for our students during inclement weather conditions!

The history of Sweetwater goes back to 1892 when Charles and Emma Henson built a cabin on what is now known as Arkansas Avenue in Sweetwater Township. In 1923, they sold their land to John Pritchard and his wife Anna who platted and named the town after themselves - "Anna's Settlement". It wasn't until 1948 that the name was changed to Sweetwater because of Mrs. Pritchard's husband's job with Jardine Wellman Brewing Company which was located in nearby Winter Haven at that time. As it turns out, Anna Pritchard never actually lived in Sweetwater; she moved to Kissimmee while her husband stayed behind to run Jardine Wellman Brewery. However, locals still call the streets by their original names (e.g., Main Street/Arkansas Avenue), proof that this little town has had more than its share of History! The first store in Sweetwater opened its doors on July 3rd 1951 - just two years after incorporation! That Store was operated by Mr. & Mrs.(now Mrs.) Merrill from Winter Haven and it served as the nucleus around which all other stores evolved over ensuing years! While many aspects of daily life here were simple (and often very rural) due to lack of convenient amenities elsewhere, such as an grocery store or post office, people here did try hard to maintain a sense of community spirit! The town of Sweetwater was founded in 1824. The first settler in the area, John Potter, built a cabin on the banks of the St Johns River. Potter became a farmer and later developed a flour mill and post office. In 1851, Harry Fowler settled in Sweetwater and started a grocery store. By 1870, there were 11 businesses in Sweetwater with a population of 150 people. In 1898, the town had an electric light plant and telephone line. On November 6, 1907, Sweetwater incorporated as a village with a population of 400 people. The first mayor was WIlliam Pritchard who served for one year. In 1914, the United States Postal Service established its first post office inSweetwater with mail service from Jacksonville to sweetwater via boat.
