The history of marine gift history in Sweetwater, Florida spans over 100 years. The City of Sweetwater was founded on December 12, 1903 by Captain John F. Hutton and his wife Lillie A. Hutton. The couple named their city after the Gulf Stream which crossed the state from Mexico to Alabama. Captain Hutton was a native of Mobile, Alabama and he had been living in Sweetwater for 10 years when he decided to found the city. He wanted to make it an important port town and provide jobs for local residents. Captain Hutton also believed that marine gifts would be a big part of the city's cultural heritage. From 1903-1911, Sweetwater hosted many international maritime conferences which were attended by politicians and business leaders from all over America. These meetings were used to discuss ways to improve transportation along the coastlines of America so that shipping could more easily reach its destination safely and efficiently. One such conference was held in 1911 which focused on shipbuilding regulations and design changes needed for new ocean liners being built at this time. Sweetwater also became known as a center for maritime gift giving during this time period because a lot of locals - both professional and amateur - participated in giving gifts to friends and family members who lived near or sailed past their shores. Sweetwater, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1878 by brothers John and James Hickey as a post office on the bank of the St Johns River. The name derived from Sweetwater Creek which runs through it. At its peak in 1920, Sweetwater had a population of 10,000 people and was one of the most populous towns in Florida. However, during World War II it lost its status as an agricultural center due to rationing of foodstuffs brought about by war supplies shortages. Afterward, sweet water declined as a commercial center until revitalization began in the late 1990s when developers started marketing local water rights to businesses for use in irrigation and other purposes. Sweetwater has several civic organizations that support public education including: The United States Park Police Museum (founded 1918), Polk County Historical Society (founded 1915), Lakeland-Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce (founded 1912), and Lions Club International (established 1913). In addition to these agencies there are also numerous private schools such as White Sands Elementary School (opened 1902), South Hills Middle School(opened 1998), Morningside Christian School(opened 1956) and First Baptist Church (completed 1886). There is also a small shopping mall with three anchor stores - JCPenney, Sears furniture store and Sam's Club - located off US-1 near Interstate 495 exit 403B.

Sweetwater is a town located in DeSoto County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1875 by John Sweetwater and his family after they acquired land east of Fort Myers. After annexation by Jacksonville in 1907, Sweetwater became a city and remains so today. In 1911, Sweetwater had a population of 2,500 people and it rapidly expanded to 4,000 by 1925; 5,000 by 1930; 7,000 by 1935; 10,000 by 1940. The growth continued until World War II when it shrunk to its current size due to the war effort and post-war austerity measures which eliminated many jobs throughout the area. The most recent census estimate placed the population at 1,823 as of July 2013

In 1875, the town became the county seat of Polk County. Sweetwater continued to grow and by 1915 it had reached its current size with a population of over 1,000 people. The towns growth stopped after World War II when the area was taken over by the United States military as part of Project Mockingbird.
