Sweetwater is a small town in northeastern Florida. The population was 7,604 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Volusia County, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sweetwater were traders from Spain and Portugal in the late 16th century. They named it "Sourdough" after their ship, the "Sourdião", lost its way off the coast of Newfoundland and ran into trouble because of bad weather. In 1822, Captain Fenton bought land near Sweetwater Creek for $1,000 from a group of pioneers who had earlier explored that area. The community grew quickly due to its location as a post-and-rail stop on Interstate 4 (I-4) and its access to hunting and fishing rights along the creek. The town was founded on December 5, 1928 by J.D. Haggerty as Haggerty's Ford Site after he acquired 50 acres (20 hectares) east of the creek for $10 per acre ($2 per hectare). He named it Sweetwater after his mother's birthplace in Tennessee, which he had visited while on vacation there in 1925. By 1930, Sweetwater had a population of 375 people; by 1990 it had increased to 653 residents with an estimated store frontage of . On July 1, 1992, State Senator Jeff Landis became the first elected official from Gainesville County when he won election as Mayor of Sweetwater over incumbent Jack D'Angelo by 11 votes to none. After serving two terms as Mayor (1992–1996), Landis was succeeded by his son Jack D’Angelo II who served until January 1st, 2004 when he became Sheriff of Hillsborough County effective February 1st following confirmation from Governor Jeb Bush that he would be running for re-election as Sheriff instead being appointed Deputy Sheriff upon designation by then Governor Charlie Crist

Sweetwater is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1868 by Captain George Sweetwater and his family. The current community was established in 1917. It lies about 8 miles (13 km) east of Fort Myers and 17 miles (27 km) south-southwest of Naples. According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of , all land. The original name for Sweetwater was "Keaton". Captain George Sweetwater's father, James Withers Sweetwater, had been born in 1826 in what is now Athens, Georgia and immigrated to Florida with his parents in 1849.
